Anna Letitia Barbauld’s “Washing-Day” and the Montgolfier Balloon
http://www.usask.ca/english/barbauld/criticism/kraft95.html
“Before we look at the way the image of the balloon melds the disparate categories invoked in the poem, we must understand just what the Montgolfiers’ achievement meant to Anna Barbauld and her contemporaries. For it seems to me that the false dualities that characterize the readings I have outlined above are derived from the twentieth-century view of ballooning as mere recreation. In the eighteenth century, it was much more.”

The Case of Anna Laetitia Barbauld’s “To Mr C[olerid]ge”
http://www.usask.ca/english/barbauld/criticism/vargo98.html
” For many years Anna Laetitia Barbauld’s tenuous place in literary history depended upon her link to Coleridge–her notorious complaint that the Rime of the Ancient Mariner “was improbable, and had no moral.” [1] Barbauld appears in the footnotes of countless anthologies; Harold Bloom and Lionel Trilling explain how as “celebrated bluestocking” her misguided insistence upon a moral inspired “Coleridge’s most helpful comment on the poem.” [2] As notions of the canon have become more inclusive, anthologists have moved Anna Barbauld from the footnotes to the table of contents.”
