Wub-e-ke-niew was born at Red Lake, a P.O.W. camp for Ahnishinahbae Ojibway and French Metis. He was born in his grandfather’s log house to the people of the Bear Dodem. Wub-e-ke-niew lost his mother at father at an early age. His grandfather raised him until his death at which time Wub-e-ke-niew and his brother were put in a government boarding school. He was drafted into the Army for World War II, spending time in Europe, especially Germany. In 1965 he helped found the American Indian Movement (AIM). He passed away on October 15, 1997.
