Beatrice Medicine (Sihasapa), 1924-

Beatrice Medicine was born on the Standing Rock Reservation, Wakpala, South Dakota. Medicine received a BS at South Dakota State University and later went on to receive her M.A. from Michigan State University and a Ph.D from the University of Wisconsin. Through her writing, Medicine has opened a way of establishing a more realistic picture of the plurality and diversity of Native American life, past and present, from real complex, Native American perspectives. She is interested in changing Native American women’s roles.
