Belle Highwalking was born on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. Highwalking attended Busby School. She told her life story to Katherine M. Weist, beginning the interviews at Weist’s home in Missoula, Montana, in 1970 and finishing the recordings a month before she died. Her daughter-in-law, Helen Hiwalker, translated the Cheyenne tapes in preparation for Weist’s subsequent editing of Highwalking’s narratives which were published in 1979.
