Ruth W. Roessel, 1934-

Navajo

Ruth W. Roessel was born in Rough Rock Arizona, on the reservation, where she was taught the traditional ways. Roessel began weaving at the age of five and continues to do so to this day. Roessel received her M.A. from Arizona State University in 1975. Her career includes teaching at Navajo community college, Tolani Lake School, Rough Rock School, Rough Rock Demonstration School, and Pinion School. She has also been a director at Rough Rock Demonstration School and a principal at Round Rock Elementary School. Roessel has been an active member of; the American Federation of Teachers, Navajo Women’s Association, North American Indian Women’s Association, and the Arizona Women in Higher Education. Roessel and her husband devote considerable energy to helping the Navajo people maintain their cultural identity.
