Allison Adelle Hedge Coke

Allison Adelle (A. A.) Hedge Coke, of Huron, Tsa la gi (Cherokee), French-Canadian and Portuguese descent, is an award-winning poet and author. She received an MFA from Vermont College, and an AFA from the Institute for American Indian Arts. Her writing has been included in many journals and magazines, as well as the anthologies Speaking for the Generations and the Lands (Univ. of Arizona Press, 1998) and Reinventing the Enemy’s Language (W.W. Norton, 1997).

Allison Hedge Coke most recently taught at Hartwick College and Northern Michigan University, and is currently a professor of Creative Writing at the Institute of American Indian Arts. She has worked with multiple youth programs including, Native youth, youth-at-risk, and incarcerated youth under the auspices of arts councils, Arts Corr, and CPITS.

She came of age working as a tobacco sharecropper and also worked with horses, in factories, in construction and as a commercial fisher. She is the former director of the American Indian Registry of Performing Arts, Hollywood, and former director Writer’s Voice, YMCA, Sioux Falls, SD.
