Jane Johnston Schoolcraft (Obahbahmwawagezhegoqua), 1800-1842

Ojibwe

Jane Johnston was born at what is now Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Jane and her siblings were educated to the Ojibwa way of life by their mother as well as the basic school subjects. In 1823 Johnston married Henry Schoolcraft, a soon to be famous Indian agent. Her written accounts of Ojibwa oral traditions have been published in several anthologies, including The Women’s Great Lakes Reader, edited by Victoria Brehm (Holy CowPress, 1998).
