“I don't think she cares. She doesn't like to hear about the war, so she gives me all the letters to keep after I read them to her” (Carr 88). Pat Carrs piece, “Death of a Confederate Colonel” demonstrates a mother, Geneva, treating her daughter, Saranell, very poorly. While Saranell faces many obstacles and hard decisions when it it comes to her mother involving money, parties and going on dates with other men when she has a husband, she tries to get passed all that even when her mother gives her no reason to. Saranel is in desperate need of a mother who loves her unconditionally and shows her on a daily basis, but Geneva doesn't seem to be phased by it and never thinks twice before she put things above her daughter that aren't as important. This story teaches a lesson on a real life perspective, that it is better to lose a parent through death than thru emotional abandonment.
Geneva is brat and is very sarcastic and seems to get away with everything but mostly she is very hard-headed and treats the people who care about her the most very poorly and pushes them away. When Geneva is on her deathbed, she rants to Sarnelle about her marriage. “I wasn't fair to your

““But I personally won't set foot in town until this war nonsense is over. You can't imagine how tiresome it is without a single presentable man in sight.” She laughed. “But of course, you can't imagine it, can you? You'll have to be older to care whether handsome men are present or not”” (Carr 84). Geneva is sidetracked by men and considering to stay out of town until all the men come back from war. She never thought to ask or think about her husband at war, but all the other men and when they will come back. Saranell feels Geneva is being rude when she gives her a hard time because she wouldn't know as much about men like her mother. Many people tend to put things that aren't as important above the things that are important, just as Geneva did to
Katie Helm, in The True Story of Mary, wife of Lincoln, provides a unique view into the life of the First Lady during the Civil war as only a family member could. Since she was the daughter of Emile Todd the half-sister of Mary Lincoln, Ms. Helm was able to collect information for her aunt’s biography directly from her mother’s memory and her access to the Todd family diaries and letters. Therefore she reveals through the knowledge she gained from her family, the struggles Mary Lincoln faced during the Civil War. As men were falling continuously in battle, Mrs. Lincoln inevitably felt the pain of losing three of her own brothers who had fought on the side of the Confederates. Devastatingly, she dared not show her grief over her losses
As the story progresses we come to understand the reason behind all of this. Unfortunately her home life is not the best as she lost her brother and her mother a victim of attempting

The Other Side of War In The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society authors, Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows paint a story of perseverance despite the tragedy from World War II. Set in Guernsey, a small island in the English Channel, the authors weave in historical facts without slowing the pace of the novel. Through character development, interaction, humor, and numerous themes, the authors transform The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society from a slow-paced historical fiction to jocular entertainment. The protagonist, Juliet Ashton, is a young writer looking for her next article after her comedic war column Izzy Bickerstaff Goes to War.

*The Civil War affected many of the families in The United States of America, for it took away children from their parents, or parents away from their children. Some had to fight their own siblings, or even their own fathers. One family affected by the war in Across Five Aprils, (Author: Irene Hunt), is the Creightons. To begin with, Confederate statues, flags, and monuments has been the history of our country so the people and the future generation can see what America have dealt with to be where we are at. In the United States, the statues and monuments are representation of historic mark as they are important part of the US history. The monuments are very significant as it symbolizes history and some of those monuments are being removed. For example, a monument of Chief Justice Roger B. Taney was removed in Maryland. One man stated that, "It has become increasingly clear in recent weeks that memorials such as this are hurtful to many residents in our community and elsewhere” (County “Here are the Confederate memorials that will be removed after Charlottesville”).
In the book “Across Five Aprils” by Irene Hunt, the author makes a few statements to portray her feelings toward the war, she uses the characters and their actions to show her emotions and thoughts about it. The views on war change throughout the book, in the beginning Tom and Jethro think war is going to be so cool, but as time went on their thoughts change. I believe one of her views from the book shows that she is passionate towards war, she uses Tom to demonstrate this. Tom is a soldier, and he is very passionate about what he does for the Union.

The Little Big Things Listening to the birds calmly chirping through the morning sunlight and being able to wake up another morning in the security of our homes are some of the little big things we take for granted every day. The movie ‘Saving Private Ryan’ and the book Johnny Got His Gun really helped me appreciate every time that I am able to wake up and live through another day. Both the movie and the book accurately showed the struggles that individuals who are fighting wars and veterans go through. Sometimes just because our day has been bad, we fail to realize that we are living a better life than the soldier who hasn’t slept, eaten, or even had something as simple as a bath in days. Due to the privileged conditions that we live in,
In The Civil War: A Narrative, Shelby Foote tells about the different perspectives of both sides of the war, ranging from Fort Sumter to Perryville. Foote explains in depth the perspectives of those that experienced the war, as well as how their lives were impacted. Growing up, Foote was always interested in writing, but it wasn’t until later in life that delved into nonfiction. He was part of the newspaper, and was mainly interested in english and history, mainly writing short stories and poems. He only began to write The Civil War: A Narrative when the publishing company Random House contacted him and asked that he write a short comprehensive book about the Civil War for the Civil War’s centennial anniversary.
Dehumanization: The act of stripping someone from everything they know, love, and live for. Leaving them with no purpose to exist. The effect of dehumanization on a person is horrible, and a major violation to the personal rights of humans. In Night on page 65, it states that Elie was bent over a box and whipped twenty five times by their Kapo Idek.
Storytelling has been around for generations. Our ancestors used it to communicate with each other and create intimacy amongst each other. Today, they’re used in similar fashion. Living In a Waiting Room The theme "new experiences reside in a waiting room" is present in The Haunted House Project by Trisha Clasen, and in people's everyday lives. People can connect to Andie, the main character, as she realizes that waiting is a huge part of life. As Andie hopes for emotional recovery in her family, people hope that all of their wants become reality. What's disappointing is some experiences prolong enough that one may not realize a change.
