The book The Glass Castle mainly focuses and revolves around Jeannette and her family. They are a homeless family that struggled to make ends meet and struggled to pay for basic necessities. Along Jeannette's path to a better life she met some great people along with some not so great people. All the amazing people she met made her hard life more enjoyable. One of the people that made Jeannette's life one worth living was Miss Jeanette Bivens.

The Glass Castle is a memoir written by Jeannette Walls, it portrays her life story and shows her hardships. It begins in the Arizona desert with little Jeannette boiling some hot dogs, did I mention that she was only three. So it didn't come as a surprise when her dress caught on fire and caused her whole right side to be burnt to a crisp. When she was taken to the hospital she seemed to enjoy it there more than her home because she wouldn't mind being in a lot of pain. The most common theme in this book is mobility, this is because they move around almost every month due to the "FBI" chasing the Walls' father Rex and when her father came to the hospital and scooped up Jeanette before she was cleared again it did not come as a surprise.

The Glass Castle is an eye opening experience about the bonds between family and how much one can take from their family. The Glass Castle tells the story of Jeannette Walls, the second oldest of four children, and their struggle of growing up in a nomadic and illegal lifestyle. The patriarch of the Walls family is Rex Walls, a drunken yet brilliant ex-Air Force pilot who loves his children almost as much as he loves hitting the bottle. The matriarch of the Walls family is Mary Rose, a starving artist who would rather focus on her art than her children’s dinner. Throughout the entire novel we see acts of Rose Mary’s selfishness “Mom had us climb on top of the roof of the car a pull down tufts of spanish moss” (130).

Jeannette Walls is walking the streets of New York City when she sees her homeless mother digging in the dumpster. Filled with shame, Jeannette rushes home and begins reflecting upon her childhood and how her parents’ choices have affected her. Throughout her childhood, Jeannette is determined to create for herself a successful life. In her memoir, The Glass Castle, Jeannette Walls narrates the story of her triumphant success against all odds, and her unconditional love for her family despite their apparent flaws.

Jeannette explains how the family often did the ‘ the skedaddle’ to avoid the bill collectors, but even with the consent moving all the children were well educated and had learned many survival skills. The next section explains how their mother loved the desert and how the family ate irregularly. She mentions that her father’s plan was to find gold, the solution to their problems, using his invention the Prospector, which can then fund for the Glass Castle, but Dad had a “small” drinking problem. In section six, Jeannette shows how little she knew about her father’s past. However, she absolutely finds it romantic how her mom and dad met, contrary to her mother who felt she had to marry the guy.

Jeannette then moves to New York City with Lori where she acquires a reporting job.

When Jeannette tells her mother: “I was too ashamed, Mom. I hid.” (page 5) she means this in two different ways. One being because she is ashamed to say her parents are homeless while she is not. Another is because she realizes that she felt this way during her childhood because there was a way they could have prevented it, but they chose not to.

Overcoming advers requires being brave and noble. Also, being able to look on the positive side in life in tough situations. Overcoming illnesses, disabilities, or disfunctional families can be very hard to deal with. Sometimes you just need to keep going and not look back and by doing so a lot more opportunities may appear in life. Christy Brown in My Left Foot, Bethany Hamilton, and Jeanette Walls in The Glass Castle are all examples of people who had to deal with great hardships in order to push them to become the successful and mature people that they are today.

The Glass Castle is a memoir from 2005 by Jeannette Walls. In my opinion, the author emotionally described in her book her childhood, in which she suffered from hunger, misery and even homelessness. Through the fault of their own parents, who stubbornly refused to stabilize and provide good living conditions for their children, Jeannette Walls went through a Gehenna in school and the environment in which she grew up. Only thanks to her own determination she achieved professional success and happiness in her personal life. The title refers to the long-held intention of her father to build his dream house, a "glass castle".

The Walls family lived a very out of the ordinary life compared to most families. They lived all over the West side of America from Phoenix to San Francisco. Yet, one of the most important areas they lived in was Battle Mountain. Jeannette spent a huge chunck of her childhood here. Battle Mountain was where she started to grow up, experiencing learning to swim to kissing a boy.

She struggled with how the society and her family shaped who she was. She was exposed to her family first which made her behave the way she did under her family’s house. Jeanette struggled with her family by taking care of the house, beings told bending the rules is okay and the acceptance of her Mom’s and Dad’s homelessness. When Jeannette left her family and went to live in New York, she becomes an individual. She fends for herself and gets her life together.

After graduating middle school her friend lost touch with her and eventually left her life for good: “By the time she got to Welch High Dinitia changed.” Jeannette was also sexually harassed by one of her friends in Phoenix while playing hide-and-seek: “Billy smushed his face against mine… ‘Guess what?’Billy shouted. ‘I raped you’” Lastly, while going to school in Phoenix Jeannette was bullied for being smart and skinny: “The other students didn’t like me much because I was so tall and pale and skinny and always raised my hand too fast… A few days after I started school, four Mexican girls followed me home and jumped me in an alleyway…”

While Jeannette was a junior in high school she became aware of the fact she had to get out of Welch and away from her parents. “ All through the long walk, the pain had kept me thinking, and by the time i reached the tree trunk, i had made two decisions. The first was that id had my first and last whipping. No one was ever going to do that to me again. The second was that, like Lori, I was going to get out of welch.
