Capote described Richard Hickock as a bloodthirsty, violent person yet he did not actually kill any of the Clutters.

In the book “Across Five Aprils” by Irene Hunt, the author makes a few statements to portray her feelings toward the war, she uses the characters and their actions to show her emotions and thoughts about it. The views on war change throughout the book, in the beginning Tom and Jethro think war is going to be so cool, but as time went on their thoughts change. I believe one of her views from the book shows that she is passionate towards war, she uses Tom to demonstrate this. Tom is a soldier, and he is very passionate about what he does for the Union.

She exclaims it is fruitcake weather, and that they had thirty fruit cakes to bake, which meant there was no time to waste. They start by going to get windfall pecans.

Dick says to Andrews, “The trouble with you, Andy, you’ve got no respect for human life. Including your own.” (318). The description of Lowell Lee Andrews insane and ruthless character, make him a memorable secondary character. The technique Truman Capote use to characterize the killers is using the opinions and encounters of their families and the people they have met.

The narrator’s fifth-grade self also seems noticeably impressionable as she relates all her quotes to either parents, “which my mother said”, “Daddy-said-so” and “my father said.” She seems as if she does not have her own ideas and lacks thinking for herself. The novel, In Cold Blood, is an anomaly in the literary paradigm. The author, Truman Capote, designed his novel in a way that made it unique when compared to others. His fundamental purpose was to present the problem of American violence and the fragility of the American Dream and how it can be so easily shattered. In order to portray his purpose, he used many rhetorical devices including syntax, diction, tone, ethos, logos and pathos. These devices allowed Capote’s novel to be different from the spectrum of other non-fiction novels and to support his purpose.
