In the article, “SOPA, controversial online piracy bill, gains support as lobbying intensifies” by Cecilia Kang reports that, “ ‘The problem of rogue Web sites is real, immediate and widespread. It harms all sectors of the economy,’ Smith said during the hearing.”(Source 1) In other words illegal downloading websites are everywhere around the world and causing the same harmful problem, the problem regarding the significant lose of money to the economy. Kang also writes, “ ‘Fundamentally, this is about jobs,’ said Michael O’Leary, who represented the Motion Picture Association of America at the hearing.”(Source 1) To put it in another way, the basis of why people- similar to Michael O’ Leary- think that individuals should be persecuted for committing Internet piracy, is simply because of the loss of jobs. When people lose jobs there is an increase of the poor and homeless. This clearly demonstrates a main consequence that Internet piracy should be

Several websites or search engines, including Hulu and Bing, allow viewers to legally view a variety of television shows with no subscription fee. Piracy, although illegal, has also increased access to broadcast and cable television series. “Cyberlocker” site such as Megashare, Hotfile and Fileserv allow users across the globe to share the same video files using a remote drop box. According to a lawsuit filed by major Hollywood studios against several cyberlocker websites in February 2011, these website are responsible for content theft, and therefore increased television viewership, on a “massive scale (Johnson).” The fact that Internet viewership of television programming is unregulated essentially nullifies the regulatory differences between over-the-air broadcast and cable.
The Theories behind Digital Piracy Introduction The topic of Digital Piracy has been widely debated for the past decade as there has been a surge in copyright infringements. The phenomenon of digital piracy has been prevalent since the days of dial-up modems and online bulletin boards, and it continues to be relevant to industry and society today. People have been gathering software and illegally “cracking” the copyright protections placed on the software to make it available to everyone else for free. When people use the word "piracy" for copyright infringement, it usually means "selling of many copies without permission”.
Each person who is downloading their music without paying is stealing the artist 's money. Furthermore, they are taking away all their hard work without paying for it. They worked so hard, not for someone like you to steal it, not only that, but you share it so people would not buy it and take it for free. To sum up, the government should not prosecute people for online piracy.
According to the research firm MusicWatch, in the United States alone 20 million individuals downloaded music from peer to peer networks (Faughnder). While there are laws against piracy, there isn’t one

LAWS1700 ESSAY Part I- Problem and Harms Online piracy is an ever-increasing problem across the globe, with the act of illegally downloading the work of another becoming considerably easier and the Government is recognising online piracy as an alerting issue. Movie piracy can include filming in a cinema, burning a movie onto a CD, and what has become a recent addition to the problem, online streaming of movies from websites. Copyright infringement is a form of theft of content in which many do not perceive as consequential, especially amongst the majority of those involved in the illegal act, being of an adolescent age. While the downloading of films may seem harmless, it generates risks both collectively and individually.
These developments in international law are making it almost impossible to prosecute pirates, “trend in international law, which seeks to take the side of individuals against governments, has run into the oldest function of international law, which is to enable governments to take effective measures against international lawlessness”
