This documentary was about first-generation college students at K-State University and basically how they were able to adjust to college and discover what they wanted to do which for all of them was become a teacher. There are nine different stories on nine different people listing the obstacles they had to go through and basically what lead them to discovering themselves and becoming the person that they are today. This documentary to me was very helpful to see that there are many other kids like me who are doing this for a first time and that everyone faces challenges but we have to overcome them by finding what makes them happy to keep them focused. I realized that I identified with each and every one of them in different ways and they all …show more content…
Those three were the individual ones that I seemed to identify the most with but there are common factors that are the same in each and every one of these students. Most of them were motivated by their parents or had some external force holding them accountable. They all had outlets such as sports or even just taking walks to keep them grounded. Mine was reading, I knew when I was younger that reading a book when I was going through something always help, it seemed like I was in a new world. Finally, even though they were all first generation students they still knew from the very beginning that they would graduate college. The advice that I would give future current-generation students is to not focus on the successes or the lifestyles of their peers and make their own paths. In college you truly will meet so many people who will be going down the wrong paths, or not exhibiting behaviors that you would think but just avoid the partying as much as possible; or if they do decide to party and stuff just to always put their education first and have their work
Deep River is a book written by Shusaku Endo. In the book with you can read 4 main stories about seeking to find oh rather said looking to be more spiritual by following the ritual and myths in a way to be in a better spiritual connection. Each character has a very important role because one of them is in search of something that helps them to understand and manage their spirituality and emotions in a way that is comfortable. Something very curious about the book is that each chapter is mentioned with the name case. For each story gave me an idea of how I would develop the story.
Living in the middle of a warzone has become second nature for the refugees living in Southern Sudan. The novel, A Long Walk to Water, written by Linda Sue Park is based on the true story of Salva and his journey to refugee camps all over Africa over the last 30 years. Salva was one of the thousands of Lost Boys to make it out of Sudan and travel to America for safety. Through all of this Salva has proven he is a survivor by enduring hostile environments, being a leader for others, and pushing forward despite the loss of his friends and family. There are many ways Salva has shown he is a survivor, but the biggest example was him undergoing the harsh environments of Southern Sudan.

A very important theme in the book A Long Walk to Water is perseverance. The first example that perseverance is an important theme is how Nya walks back and forth to a faraway pond 2 times a day, every day, for seven months a year without stopping. Also, on the path, there are thorns everywhere that are painful to remove. Nya only gets a small bit of water and rest even though it is very hot and dry. Even the water that Nya gets with much pain and suffering is muddy and infected with Guinea Worms.
Being a first generation student in my family has always motivated my desire to succeed academically. So, I was always encouraged to put my education in front of everything else. I believe that going to college will help me figure out my hidden skills and develop my full potential to adjust in the real world. I want to be a psychologist, helping and counselling people. For this, I need to earn a doctorate degree.
The Long Walk by Stephen King The Long Walk by Stephen King is a novel set on the east coast of America it ihe not too far future. In the novel, most of the action takes place on the East Coast. The novel takes place in the morrow. The place is just like it is today, but it is “ultra-conservative.”
Perseverance is an important theme in A Long Walk To Water. The first example of Perseverance is when Salva listens to what his uncle says. His uncle uses his full name, and Salva thinks of his family. Uncle tells him to only walk as far as that bush, or clump of rocks. Salva perseveres by thinking of his family.
My mother and father have always wanted the best for me, like all good parents do. One of the many things that they expect from me is to receive a college education, something that they never had the chance to do. My parents always advise me to not to make the same mistakes as they did, to go to college so I can get a good job and not have to struggle in my life. With no alternative, my father had to drop out of school to help his family financially after his parents had gotten a divorce, and then he had received his GED.

Lawrence got the help and attention he needs from Brandi but, he doesn’t do the same for her. The situation or event from the documentary that affected the most was when Marco graduate from Sharpton high school.
There are a lot of obstacles students face when trying to college and going to college, sometimes these obstacles involve how counseling and emotional support is out of the question and other reasons are fall into the category of not having too much money to afford school or if they could afford college through scholarships they still struggle with meeting their basic needs. Students lots of minority students face constant oppression because of students face discouragement and this can lead students down two roads, sometimes to regret and misery. Minorities have never really grasp the opportunity of getting a higher education because these students are always discouraged from dreaming of college, making
“Quitting leads to much less happiness in life than perseverance and hope.” (Page 117) -Salva Dut In Sudan the water is the hardest thing to get, imagine you going to walk 5 miles to get a 45lb water jug then put on your head and walk another 5 mile all the way back home but the water in jug is full of insects and bacteria that can make you sick or even death after while the natural water will dry up so you and your family have to move with it and you walk again for miles they hope to find water and they won’t get killed by humans or animals. Salva is changing this cycle of moving with the water by raising money for them but he could not have done it if he was not a water follower himself and his story shows how he has become a leader.

College is one of the most significant times in a person’s life. Every year high school kids will visit many different colleges so that they can be confident in their college decision. Some kids will follow in their parent’s foot steps and base their decision on where their mom or dad went, though, not all kids are fortunate to have help from their parents. Many kids nowadays may be the first in their family to take on higher education. The article, “First Generation College Students: Unprepared and Behind” by Liz Riggs explains that kids who are the first in their family to take on college are at a disadvantage compared to kids with parents who attended college.
