People around the world have been protesting for years and each protest was made to reach a goal. Protests have been used to accomplish many things such as economic, cultural, or political issues. In the end, protests are a prominent part of history
During the Vietnam War, thousands upon thousands of American Soldiers lost their lives in a war that wasn't their war to fight. Family members lost their sons, grandsons, or nephews. After seeing that too many people were dying, protesters marched to bring soldiers back to America. However, marches weren't the only way for protesters to express their feelings concerning bringing the soldiers home. Songs were created to get artist’s points across. For example, Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong

One example of a modern-day protest is the movement “Me too”. Many people of all ages, races, and genders protest “Me too” because many believe that spreading the word can help women and other survivors heal from their experiences. According to the “Me Too” official website, “The ‘me too.’ the movement was founded in 2006 to help survivors of sexual violence… to find pathways to healing” (Me Too Official Website). By creating a community of other survivors and supporters, one might feel safer to talk about it. By using the hashtag #MeToo, a “vital conversation about sexual violence has been thrust into the national dialogue” (Me Too Official Website). This suggests that the protest has been very effective and has spread on a global scale. By looking at this protest, one can assume that one of the reasons why people protest is to help rebuild and create a safe community for …show more content…
The “Me Too” protest “has shown once again the wisdom of the adage that there is strength in numbers -- even as it highlights that it is still difficult for individual women who come forth with accusations of sexual harassment or assault to be supported or believed and thus find justice” (Ben-Ghlat). By creating a big community, the supporters are most likely to get justice. It can be implied that along with the other reasons, people protest to get justice for whatever they may be protesting. If a larger audience wants something then it is more apparent for it to come true. For example, in Vietnam, more and more people were realizing that a lot of soldiers were dying prompting them to protest justice for the dead soldiers. The same thing applies when people did not want the soldiers to come home. The saying “strength in numbers” is effective when it comes to
The war in Vietnam to do this day has gone down as one of the influential and controversial wars in United States history. The war lasted from 1955 to 1975.The nation as a whole began to uproar over the war and the major consequences of the war. There were many reasons why so many Americans were against the war. Public opinion steadily turned against the war following 1967 and by 1970 only a third of Americans believed that the U.S. had not made a mistake by sending troops to fight in Vietnam (Wikipedia). Not to mention, many young people protested because they were the ones being drafted while others were against the war because the anti-war movement grew increasingly popular among the counterculture and drug culture in American society and
Australia’s participation in the Vietnam war was not always widely opposed. As Australia’s commitment began to grow, conscription was starting to make up a large percentage of Australian men deployed and killed. Because the public believed they were losing the war, in the early 1970s over 200,000 Australians marched in the streets of Australia’s major city’s to protest Australia’s participation in the war. In this period the United States of America’s Government
Anti-war demonstration began in the month between the announcement and the deployment of the troops in Vietnam. Wives of deployed soldiers sent out angry letters, gave angry phone calls and the departure date had to be kept a secret in order to avoid an angry scene or protests. At first there was not much opposition however as the war progressed more people switched from supported the war to opposing
The Ted Talk “Violence Against Women- It’s a Men’s Issue”, presented by Jackson Katz, confirms the mass similarly are afraid to speak up. Realizing that in a crowd, people tend to be followers rather than leaders or persuaders, he pondered why this is and while analyzing the topic of violence against women, he understood, “a lot of women who have been trying to speak out about these issues, today and yesterday and for years and years, often get shouted down for their efforts. They get called nasty names like "male-basher" and "man-hater," and the disgusting and offensive "feminazi", right?” The willingness of others to be spectators is high due to the stigma certain people create for others who veer from the majority.
The Hollaback video is trying to alert us to fight for women that are being harassed. However, as the Crunk Feminist Collective article points out, the video should also be used to alert individuals about racism. This video
In 1965 when the protests first began they were small, and they eventually spread to college campuses. During this same year protests during the Vietnam War gained national prominence when the U.S. bombed North Vietnam. The reason was what they called the threefold; which was to include a boost in south Vietnamese morale, cut down on infiltration of Communist troops from the North, and forcing the Hanoi to stop its support of the insurgency in South Vietnam. Within these protests there was a wide variety of people for example; artists, intellectuals and hippies. The hippie movement first started when President Kennedy was assassinated.
Article: When Veterans Protested the Vietnam War Song: We gotta get out of this place In the article, “When Veterans Protested the Vietnam War”, it talked in a first person point of view. Jan Barry, who wrote the article, described many reasons why war was not a good idea. In the song, “We gotta get out of this place”, it talked about how war was a waste of time and that you’ll eventually die before your time.
Another example of a protest would be the Black Lives Matters movement that has been going on recently. People from the movement have been blocking freeways and even coming to protest at the Minnesota State Fair and disturbing the peace of everybody there and causing them to have much more security. I am not against what they are standing up for in the slightest bit, I am more just against the fact that they are out blocking major roads and intersections and are showing up protesting at a family function like the state fair. Not all of the friendly protests are so bad but I think that if they are putting other people at risk or in danger no matter it be physical, or mental danger or even just losing their jobs that they have, that, in my opinion, would definitely create a more negative impact on
Recap of Protest Activity NATIONWIDE: From October 22-25, anti-police brutality activists conducted demonstrations in several cities to mark the 20th nationwide day of action against alleged police brutality. Key protests occurred in New York City and Chicago. In New York City, a peaceful protest started at Washington Square Park on October 24 and ended with 11 arrests near Bryant Park during the protest against police brutality. In Chicago, activists conducted a protest on October 24 outside the 122nd International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) event attended by Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn.
Why did the protesting happen? There are multiple reasons why this miserable protesting ought to have happened. Several people state that the police continue not being fair, other people say it’s fair to them. Lots of people took the risk of protesting with the other people, and lots of people were shot while protesting.
A rally hosted in July of 2014 in Reykjavik, Iceland had over 11,000 protesters attend. (Mendes/Macmillan) Although SlutWalks are held all over the globe, they don’t all convey the same message. While SlutWalks in Canada and America are focused on reclaiming the word “slut,” making victims feel less ashamed, and protesting rape culture, more conservative countries, like India, are marching more for women’s
Me too is a movement started by Tarana Burke in 2006 who wanted women to feel safe and be able to tell their stories than in 2017 Alyssa Milano shared a tweet"If all the women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted wrote 'Me too.' as a status, we might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem.” That got popular and then she later realized that someone else had also said the same thing but some years earlier about the same movement. Then later on in 2017 when women wrote and charged Harvey Weinstein of harassment. Jessicka Adam´s was the first woman to come out with the fact that another musician Jeordie White, she accused him of rape, domestic violence, and verbal abuse.
Oprah Winfrey: #Me Too “Me too.” It is hard to believe that this little two-word phrase would be a tool used in shifting the balance of conversation that we as America have about the subject of sexual assault. Recently there has been a campaign in Hollywood where women are standing in solidarity with other women who have been sexually harassed in the industry. “Me too” was the hashtag assigned to this movement/campaign and has been typed on various social media outlets by many celebrities, as well as people all over the world.
We have the right to engage in protest, but do so peacefully. Issues need to be advertised, society needs to question. It’s one of the most effective ways to gain followers to join your movement, making it stronger. When you hold a protest, It shows that you are passionate about the issue and want it to be resolved. Protests are more effective in getting the issue resolved rather than going through legal channels therefore making it the best of the two methods.
Leslie Gore was a great advocate for these movements with her hit single “You Don’t Own Me”. To be honest this whole song has a very strong and repetitive message and that is “ I don’t tell you what to do/I don’t tell you what to say” this is an out cry for equality in the relationship between a woman and a man at the time. In todays age it would still mean the same thing regardless of the gender that the relationships are comprised of. Another important piece of this song is essentially what the title says “ You Don’t Own Me.” This simple line right here means so much.
