Jack Hunter’s “How Gun Control Kills” takes a more logical stance on the current issue of gun control. However, Hunter starts off using pathos, an appeal to emotion, and ethos, appealing to ethics. “Is there an evil worse than killing children?” Hunter asks in the opening paragraph. “Is there anything more heart-wrenching than the feeling of absolute helplessness in our inability to protect them?”

A Rhetorical analysis of “Generation Velcro” In “Generation Velcro,” Dorothy Woodend discusses the lack of basic skills and knowledge that is being passed down from generation to generation, and how this could be a fundamental problem for both generation Y and the future of planet earth. Woodend, setting the tone for her article, asks the question, “[i]s this generation heading into a coming dark age with little more than the ability to update their Facebook statuses and watch YouTube, all with laces untied?” (par. 7). Hanna Rosin’s article, “The Overprotected Kid”, addresses the issue that kids are missing out on developmental benefits when they are not allowed to explore the world by weighing their own risks. She introduces rhetoric concepts such as audience, genre, and purpose to get her point across to her readers. Rosin uses these ideas to portray her opinion in a unique way to connect to her readers and persuade them to consider her viewpoint as their own. This article seems to be written as a persuasive journal entry to parents to sway their parenting behaviors to be less overprotective. In Rosin’s article, she makes a strong argument that kids need independence by making her audience, genre, and purpose known from start to finish.

Rationale: The Things I Carry In part 4: Critical study, we have examined the text The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, I have attempted to replicate a passage from his work to exemplify both the physical and the abstract things I carry with me on a daily basis. Through my written task, “The Things I Carry”, I have attempted to capture an honest introspection of a girl of indomitable spirit despite all the ordeals in her life by mimicking Tim O’ Brien’s writing style. I mirrored O’ Brien’s writing style in how I structured my essay.

The article uses sources that include, interviews conducted by the author, outside sources, and personal experiences in giving detailed discerptions of self-driving car technologies making it a secondary source. The article being published in the Business Insider and the article not having proper citations for the sources used categorizes it as a popular source. The advertisement I chose for this assignment is a Camel cigarette advertisement from the 1950s. The top half of the advertisement depicts an older male doctor smoking a Camel cigarette. The caption for the top half of the image uses rhetorical strategies to convince the viewer to purchase Camel cigarettes. The author of this advertisement uses different text sizes and effects to highlight what is important in the advertisement.

Rhetorical analysis is an investigation into how someone uses his/her critical reading skills to analyze text. The objective of the rhetorical analysis is the study of how the author writes, instead of what the author wrote. At that point, we need to examine the method that the author uses to attain his goal. In Michael Levin's The Case for Torture, Levin provides an argument in which he discusses the significance of inflicting torture to perpetrators as a way of punishment. In his argument, he dispenses a critical approach into what he believes justifies torture in certain situations. Torture is assumed to be banned in our culture and the thought of it takes society back to the brutal ages. He argues that societies that are enlightened reject torture and the authoritative figure that engage in its application risk the displeasure of the United States. In his perspective, he provides instances in which wrongdoers put the lives of innocent people at risk and discusses the aspect of death and idealism.

The use of plastic bags has been debated for years. Some people prefer to use them, and others would rather use substitutes, and most have their personal reasons why they lean one way or the other in the argument. In this article, the author addresses why he believes plastic bags should not be banned. The author, Adam B. Summers, uses various literary tools and appeals throughout his article, "Bag Ban Bad for Freedom and Environment," to support his argument that banning plastic bags would do more harm than good. Logical appeal is the most frequently used literary device in the passage.
