Post-traumatic stress disorder, often referred to as PTSD is a mental health disease that people develop after experiencing and or witnessing a traumatic event in their life. When diagnosed with PTSD your personality can drastically change. In the book A Separate Peace, the author John Knowles establishes a character, Elwin Lepellier to be a prime candidate for post-traumatic stress disorder. Lepellier appears to have PTSD due to the many symptoms he was expressing. A common symptom is angry outbursts (opposing viewpoints, Gale). Leper demonstrates this symptom in chapter ten, page one forty three. It states “‘I escaped.’ the word surging out in a voice and intensity that was not leper 's.” In other words as Gene, the narrator of the …show more content…
To begin with, approximately a third of veterans will experience PTSD after living through trauma (Opposing viewpoints, Gale). In chapter ten, page one hundred and fifty of A Separate Peace it reads, “...he was holding a broom because we had been sweeping out the barracks, but I saw right away that it wasn 't a broom, it was a man 's leg that had been cut off.” This is an example of the trauma these veterans lived through which caused the PTSD. On the same note, in the database Are you at risk of suffering from PTSD? Found on Opposing Viewpoints, Gale, it states "A first responder is twice as likely to develop PTSD." Elwin was considered a first responder because he was a soldier in war. A first responder is more likely to see a traumatic things because they are constantly exposed to terror therefore are at higher risk of having PTSD. Next, in a study performed by Yale it was proven that about thirty percent of veterans experience post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms. Those statistics are quite high, so it 's no surprise Elwin Lepellier falls into that thirty percent. To, summarize it 's no shock that Elwin
Why do we hurt the ones we love? Why is it that the ones we love the most are the one we seems to hurt the most? In Scarlet Ibis and in Separate Peace both protagonist have some doing in the death of the crippled boy and Finny, Gene’s best friend. Finny is happy character who goes around spreading cheer and joy. In Separate Peace Gene, Finny’s best friend, who grows more and more envious each day jounces a limb that causes Finny to fall and shatters his leg, ruining his chances of ever playing sports again.
In the intense and terrible circumstances, Gene becomes a mature person and grows into a real soldier that makes it home safe from the war and his internal own battles. Elwin Lepellier, also known as Leper, is an example of another character that goes through an extremely sobering experience during 1942-43. Leper is shown as a benign and passive sort of character from Gene’s perspective. He is portrayed as a follower but is seen refusing to do activities he doesn 't feel comfortable doing, but he continues to tag along with the rest of The Suicide Society. This is evident when he refuses to jump from the tree and declines Gene’s pass during Blitzball.
A Separate Peace The novel “A Separate Peace” by John Knowles has a vast array of characters ranging from unimportant to crucial. The story paints two best friends as the main characters, Finny and Gene. Gene is more intellectually skilled while Finny is more physically skilled. Some of the “minor characters” play a role almost as important as the main characters. For example Quackenbush, Brinker, and Elwin they all are minor characters and nevertheless play a very important role in the story.
What is PTSD? PTSD is an abbreviation for post-traumatic stress disorder, a condition lasting from months to years that triggers flashbacks of a terrifying event that the infected have experienced accompanied with intense emotional and physical pain. In the Odyssey, the character Odysseus fought the Trojan War that lasted for 10 years. For 10 years, he fought face to face with his comrades against the Trojans far away from his wife and son. For 10 years, so many people have died that the rivers were now filled with blood and you can smell the scent of death.
Strength develops in someone through their experiences which have the ability to make them an emotionally stronger person. A quote by Ernest Hemingway presents that “the world breaks everyone, then some become strong at the broken places.” Even those who suffer the most will have the ability to bounce back at a stronger state. This theme reveals its relevance in A Separate Peace by John Knowles as we analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the main characters, Finny and Gene. Although some may insist that Finny’s emotional state fits the mold of a weak character, I have confidence that Finny has the most inner strength out of the two boys given his description and actions throughout the novel.
All Quiet on The Western Front, written by Erich Maria Remarque, is a novel composed after World War One to convey the experiences of German soldiers during this horrific time of fighting. He brought to light many important issues that occur during wars. In this book, three horrors of war that had the largest impact were the lack of sanitation in the trenches, the loss of comrades, and the shock that came from unexpected and ongoing shelling. The lack of sanitation in the trenches caused many diseases, infections, and terrible memories to me made.
Guilt is a funny concept, that has a different affects on different people. Guilt can cause some to confess and it releases the burden, but for those who take long to confess, it can turn into a negative reaction that can cripple your emotions. A Separate Peace is set in a boarding school in New England. Gene, a main character, is an incisive introvert whose best friend, Phineas, is a handsome athlete. When an accident occurs over the Summer, that leaves Gene and Finny hurt in some way, what comes next could take a toll on their friendship.
He exudes the symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), such as nightmares, guilt, flashbacks, self-destructive behavior, and agitation. “He could feel it inside his skull- the tension of little threads being pulled and how it was with tangled throughs tied together, and as he tried to pill them part and rewind them into their place, they snagged and tangled

For instance, war veterans sometimes cannot view fireworks as it induces fear in them due to the sound of the explosions seeming like gun shots. In Slaughterhouse-Five, author Kurt Vonnegut, a former soldier in World War II, explores the concept of post-traumatic stress disorder by identifying the underlying causes, highlighting the impacts and symptoms of PTSD, and evaluating coping mechanisms. During a time period where post-traumatic stress disorder was still incredibly controversial, Vonnegut utilized the character of Billy Pilgrim to identify the causes of PTSD. The mental disorder can have many causes as explained in the article “Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder,” in which the National Institute of Mental Health states, “Not everyone with PTSD has been through a dangerous event.
PTSD is an anxiety disorder that follows the experience of a traumatic event. Of the 2.7 million American veterans that served in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, at least 20% were diagnosed with PTSD (Veterans Statistics). PTSD affects everyone differently but the most common symptoms of PTSD include: reliving the event, increased anxiety, and avoiding any reminders of the trauma (Robinson,Segal, Smith). The movie Shutter Island is overwhelmingly filled with themes of mental health. Before moving into the content of this paper I would like to disclose this movie contains a false and melodramatic portrayal of mental illness, this is not an accurate representation of the field. The movie begins with Federal Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his new partner traveling to a secluded island containing a mental facility for the criminally insane. They are supposedly there to investigate a missing patient, however, throughout the movie we see clips with signs and symptoms that point to Teddy’s own diagnosis of a mental disorder. That maybe Teddy isn’t exactly on the island for an investigation but has his own hidden secrets to uncover.
He sees things. He keeps quiet. He understands. The Perks of Being a Wallflower’s main character Charlie, is a wallflower: reserved, isolated, and observant. Like a fly on the wall, he stays in the background, and goes unnoticed by many.
