Aaron Hernandez was a tight end for the New England Patriots (“Aaron Hernandez,” 2017). He went to college at the University of Florida, but did not complete his degree in order to join the pro league. In August of 2012, he signed a 5 year extension contract with the team. However, about two years later Hernandez was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, as well as other weapon related charges. A guilty verdict in April of 2015 for the murder landed Hernandez with a life sentence without parole. Hernandez also faced several unrelated charges along the same time frame, including a double homicide (though he was found not guilty for these charges). Hernandez was found dead on April 19th, 2017, hung from apparent suicide in his cell.

Massachusetts State Police sergeant Stephan Walsh testified that the casings from the crime scene were determined to have come from the same gun and the gun was likely to have been a .45-caliber Glock pistol (McCann, 2015). The make of the gun was deduced to the unique barrel design of a Glock. Another casing was recovered from a trash can at the rental car company. When the Nissan was returned and cleaned, a worker at the company threw the casing away, along with a few other pieces of evidence (Sterbenz, 2015). Walsh testified that the striations, along with class characteristics of the casing matched between the casings from the crime scene and the one from the car (McCann, 2015). Defensive linemen Ethan Westbrooks was arrested after a highway patrol officer found a stolen gun in his vehicle. He was speeding in interstate 5 near Bakersfield California when a highway patrol officer stopped him and asked for his license and registration. Westbrook was searching for his registration and the officer spotted an illegal gun in the glove department. He was arrested on Friday on suspicion of possessing a loaded firearm, possessing a stolen firearm and possessing a high-capacity magazine. The gun was reported stolen back in 2009 in Sacramento, California with a clip that holds 13 rounds.

Furthermore, the night of the murder Blake was carrying a registered .38 Special Smith and Wesson revolver so when he was tested for gunshot residue his defense argued that the powder could have been from the revolver he was carrying, not from the murder weapon.
