During the time of the salem witch trials and the late 1980’s-1990’s during baseball's Steroid Era were two different things, but they also had one thing in common the hysteria that was brought by both of these. In the witch trials there were many of people dying and in baseball there was various amounts of people getting suspended and their chances at the hall of fame forever destroyed. Many of people know about the Salem Witch Trials as one of the most moments and years of hysteria. During this time there were many of people wrongly executed. During the 1950’s a man wrote a book called The Crucible. It is about the real life events of the trials and was seen as an adaptation of what actually happened. In this play Abigail Williams is a young girl that makes up …show more content…
This was not even close to the extent of the Steroid Era in baseball. During this time they found out that the home run record breaker Barry Bonds was doping this turned into a huge ordeal and many of people were call out for doping. Many of people's careers and reputation were destroyed, and many people didn't like that they were getting called out and losing the whole game of baseball’s respect. They threw out names in both instances and in one they were true somewhat but there was many people that got killed because someone just accused them and they didn't have any proof either way if it was true or not. During the baseball era they knew who was cause of drug testing, but throwing people's names out there without proof and just saying they are doing something caused all the hysteria in the first place. They had many of the names right during the steroid era, but not at all in the novel. They just threw out names in the novel to save their own butt. They didn't think about anyone else besides saving their own life. If people would have just
Caroline Davis was a newly married woman who had never lived outside of the privileged green lawns of suburban Washington, D.C. Although she was married, she had not cleared the last hurdle into complete adulthood by obtaining a full time job. She had been quite busy with planning the wedding and such. Her darling husband, Wesley, had been employed by the Centers for Disease Control, which all its employees called the "CDC", since he finished his Residency at the prestigious Bethesda Naval Hospital in 1991. Wesley had based his career as an epidemiologist on researching the AIDS epidemic.
Williams was born in Lynwood, California, a suburb of Los Angeles, on June 17, 1980, the fourth of five daughters born to Richard and Oracene (nicknamed Brandi) Williams. Sister Serena, the last of the five Williams sisters, was born in September 1981. Her father ran a private security firm in Compton and was a dedicated fan of tennis, who became hooked on the game by watching televised coverage of professional tournaments, told his wife that he wanted to make tennis stars out of his daughters. He had little luck with his older girls—Isha, Lyndrea, and Yetunde—none of whom showed any particular aptitude for the game. His efforts proved far more successful with Venus and Serena, both of whom turned out to be naturals on the court.
“I’m not saying it was right, but you could tell he wasn’t the only person using steroids at the time. They were illegal for regular people to do it, still illegal for him to do it, but baseball didn’t really have a ban against them, so every player was trying to gain an edge, but it didn’t really change my opinion of him. I just think at the time they were all doing them, that it was the thing to do,”
Shortly after, he too was required to undergo drug testing to settle suspicions. The use of drugs at this time wasn’t just happening in baseball, but all across different athletic platforms. Since several athletes in the past years were tested to have used PED’s (performance enhancing drugs) at the time of competition, the International Olympics Committee took a fighting stance against the use of drugs in sport stating: “The use of doping agents in sport is both unhealthy and contrary to the ethics of sport” as their central “reason” to why PEDs are banned from the Olympics. Given the prestige that the Olympics holds over all other sports, leagues from different sports all over started to follow suit. However, the statements to ban the use of these drugs on the account that they are unhealthy to the athlete and “contrary” to the ethics of sport is
Mass hysteria has occurred everywhere in the world, but one question is asked; Who starts it? In 1692, Salem, Massachusetts a hysteria about witchcraft in the town breaks out and many innocent people will lose their lives. Abigail Williams is a servant in the town and in my opinion should be held responsible for the witchcraft hysteria and here’s why.
In the play, Abigail Williams is shown as malicious young women, who could lie without any problems and consequences. Abigail decided for herself that she can make up the stories, accusing people of being witches, to cover
“Your time to shine has arrived Jones.” “I appreciate it so much Chief, I promise you there is no way in which I can let you down.” “We already discuss it with the board, we trust you Jones. We analyzed your whole record history, starting four years ago when you were first recruited to this Secrete Teen Agent Institution. You are now one of our top agents, and definitely the perfect match for this important mission.
You could argue that comparing betting on baseball while playing and managing is not comparable to steroid users. That it is comparing apples to oranges, but I’m arguing this, breaking the rules is breaking the rules, at least gambling never improved Pete Rose’s performance in a biological sense. Pete Rose’s stats speak for themselves he is the All-Time hit leader with 4,256, along with
Not only can steroids affect players, but it can also tarnish the name of The Hall of Fame. To me, The Hall of Fame is about hard work, commitment, and dedication. So why let steroids users in The Hall of Fame now? No one
There have been other player's who have broken records and could of easily been hall of fame players if they haven’t tried to level the playing field and take advantage of the game of baseball. Other big time names besides Sammy Sosa and Mark Mcgwire that came out of that era who were caught using performance enhancing substances was Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Jose Canseco, and Alex Rodriguez. All of these players were good candidates for the hall of fame. Some of the players still eligible for the hall of fame are Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens. In the latest voting ballot done in 2017.
The story is about a young girl named Abigail who is obsessed with a married man named John Proctor, who goes to Salem’s witch trials in Massachusetts during 1692. In order for Abigail being with Proctor she had to get rid of Proctor’s wife; Elizabeth. The main conflict of the movie was because of the obsession Abigail had with Proctor, innocent people were being accused of witchcraft. People were accused of witchcraft by Abigail and a group of young girls who would believe what she would say about seeing people doing witchcraft. It is a play that many people are always going to remember about because it is unbelievable that 19 people were hanged, one man was put on top of him a huge rock, and more people were accused and died in prison.
When taking the full history of baseball into account, the steroid era shouldn’t completely diminish the on-field accomplishments of some of the greatest ball players of all
A step in this direction is the new drug testing program that was negotiated and approved by the owners and players for the 2005 season. It is far more comprehensive, intrusive, and punitive than the 2002 program that it replaced. Time will tell whether the new program will rid the sport of the blight which allows juiced-up players to achieve phony records that overshadow authentic accomplishments (Staudohar. 2005).” All players work hard everyday, but the ones who are taking steroids to get ahead faster are just cheating themselves. Although, there could be a brighter side to steroid use.
Abigail Williams is not your typical teenage girl. She is a girl that will drink blood to kill someone, accuse people of witchcraft, and have a affair. By looking at The Crucible, one can see that Abigail Williams develops the theme of reputation, which is important because people who fear losing their reputation spread hysteria. Protecting her reputation motivates Abigail Williams to accuse others of being a witch.
A lot of “greats” such as Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, and Alex Rodriquez have all been linked to PEDS some time in their careers. When you find out about any athlete’s use of PEDS it makes you wonder have they been using them their entire career. Should any wins, they were involved in be voided? Should all athletes be tested for PEDS before each event? Those are all questions we should all think about.
