Abortion Abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy and is most commonly preformed in the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. Most surgical abortions are safe but can be expensive which cause many people to get unsafe abortions. About 47,000 women die from complications from these unsafe abortions. Due to the many different views of abortion, it is a very controversial topic today. Abortion can be looked at in numerous ways based on the following theories, Structural-functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interaction. There are two types of abortion medical and surgical. Teenage girl might get an abortion because she doesn’t want her parents to find out and college is an easier option. A woman who was raped and got pregnant might get an abortion because she doesn’t want to be reminded of it. Some might get an abortion simply because they can’t afford to have the baby and doesn’t want to bring a child into that kind of life. Others might get an abortion to cover up an affair. Since there are so many different reasons for having them people have different views on it. Abortion is a controversial topic and there are two different views of abortion. To some abortion it is considered a “life-saver” because they are either very young and are still in school or cant afford to keep the child. If a pregnant teenage girl gets an abortion she is able to go to college, get a job, and has kids later on when she has the money to support them. Abortion also helps keep the population down. In the structural functional approach abortion has an essential purpose. Abortion keeps the population down, provides jobs for doctors and nurses, and prevents unwanted children from being born. Dangerous unsafe abortions could be prevented if abortion was legalized. The conflict theory is based on economics. Abortion could be a class issue, poor and workingwomen may not be able to afford the abortion, where middle class and upper class women can. Teenage pregnancies can also be an economic issue, by having the abortion the girl is able to go to school, get a job, and have children later on in her life. If she can’t afford the abortion she is less likely to go to college and sometimes not continue their high school education.
