Artificial Selection/ Natural Selection When the word artificial comes to my mind fake thoughts run through me, like water runs down your throat. Artificial christmas trees, flowers, foods, anything artificial you can think of, almost everyone has it and has produced it. As you read this, do you have any idea what artificial means? Said on dictionary.com, artificial means produced by humans, not occurring naturally. For example, artificial selection would be taking a wild animal, such as a whale, living in the huge ocean and putting him/her in a place like Seaworld, where they don’t adapt to the environment well, and are not used to the resources and rules. As you can see there has been many deaths at Seaworld because the animals, such as Orca whales, can not adapt to the small warm environment after being in the huge ocean with their family for their whole life. As said on “Live Science”“A 3-month-old orca calf …show more content…
Since now we know lots about artificial selection, let 's hear a bit about natural selection also known better as, the process whereby organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and …show more content…
A disadvantage of artificial selection is stated on, “Lee County Students”, saying that “However, genetic modification is highly controversial.” This is a disadvantage because artificial selection is not fully proven to work, and there are not many studies that show it works easily. Another disadvantage of artificial selection is an unexpected result. There are many different outcomes of artificial selection and can be a surprise to the organism and owner, stated on “Pros and Cons of Artificial Selection”. A final disadvantage of artificial selection is shortened life. The offspring of an organism can have a lower than average lifespan due to artificial selection, said on “Pros and Cons of Artificial
Selective breeding can be used for a lot of good things. However, there are some downsides to using it. One is that it can cause discomfort to the animals. For example, in the article “Did Science Build a Better Turkey?” written by Kimberly Crandell she discusses a major issue with selective breeding. “Industry-bred birds have such unusually large breasts, so disproportionate with the rest of their bodies that they often have trouble standing, walking and mating.”
In captivity, there’s nowhere for them to go, which leads to injuries and death.” The text supports my claim because it shows that Orcas cannot live with their mothers in captivity and they might get in fights and hate other Orcas because they are not the same and don't speak the same language. However, in the wild, Orcas stay and live with their mothers and don't get in many fights. Also, the text supports my claim because it shows that Seaworld is not treating Orcas right and having too many orcas in the same area which results in fights and anxiety which increase the chance of orcas murdering each other and they want to find
nurture debate. Yet, he applies his reasoning not in a manner that concludes the prominence of one over the other, but in which Capote ultimately qualifies a murderer (or a mere criminal) as a product of the interaction between his environment as well as his genetics—consequently labeling this a seemingly tragic fate in itself. Amongst the world of psychology, the nature-nurture issue is defined as “the longstanding controversy over the relative contributions that genes and experience make to the development of psychological traits and behaviors,” in which today’s scientific minds see traits and behaviors arising from the simultaneous interaction of both nature and nurture (Myers 9). Rooted and intertwined into essentially every underlying concept and thought-process debated and agreed upon in the psychological sphere, scientists as well as ancient thinkers have long contested the prominence of one’s influence over the other.
SeaWorld has been in the spotlight for several years now. Whether it is negative or positive publicity, someone is talking about SeaWorld; from the new animal births at their facility, killer whales attacking their trainer and the sudden unexplainable deaths of many of their animals. In 2013 the documentary “Blackfish” explained how SeaWorld’s animals and staff are really treated. Since the release of Blackfish, SeaWorld’s image and attendance has gone down the drain. SeaWorld San Diego’s attendance is down 12% and SeaWorld Orlando is down 8% (Weisberg, 2015).
However, according to SeaWorld 's new chairman and CEO Joel Manby, he believes that “uncontrollable exposure to pollution, ocean debris and life-threatening pathogens in ocean waters are just a few of the factors that make sea pens an unhealthy living environment for any of our animals.” The orcas are use to a clean environment and the ocean is everything but that. Their immune systems would hardly be capable of enduring those threats. For instance, as claimed by LaTimes.com, Dold, SeaWorld 's chief veterinarian believes “pens can also expose whales to viruses passed on through other fish in the pens or toxins and oil spills that wash in with the tide.” Even though it would be nice to allow these creatures to once again live in the ocean at a certain extent , that kind of setting would hurt their well
That’s so crazy! Some people like to think that if SeaWorld has to close down, then so should the zoo. But that is really different, at the zoo no know has been hurt by an animal (at least I don’t think so), but at SeaWorld they have been many death occurred, because kids think it is safe for them to touch the animals, plus while training the orcas killed the trainers. “Orcas in the wild have an average life expectancy of 30 to 50 years—their estimated maximum lifespan is 60 to 70 years for males and 80 to over 100 for females. The average age of death for orcas who have died at SeaWorld is 13 years old,” by SeaWorldog Hunt.
On top of all of this, they are not being bred naturally. In SeaWorld, Orcas naturally breed at the age of 15, but in SeaWorld they are bred at the age of 8 or 9 (thetoptens). This shows that the company only wants more animals for more shows and more money, even though it is not right. You might be saying, “well they have rehabilitation center inside the parks to help the animals when needed.” This is true, but no matter how much medicine you give them cannot cure their animal nature of wanting to be free in the ocean and stop their sadness of being enclosed.
Finally, genetic modifying can allow people to live longer. You may think that this is good that people would live longer, but there some negative aspects to this. Life would be very boring of course, but more importantly, overpopulation would happen and humans would be in competition with one another since everything would now be limited. While some aspects of genetic engineering should appealing, they all most likely have a dark secret hiding within
SeaWorld is one of the most visited amusement parks in the United States where families are able to get together and see animals and their trainers perform incredible stunts. However, SeaWorld has been under the flame after the public opinion of SeaWorld drastically changed after the release of the movie Blackfish by Gabriela Cowperthwaite in 2012. The documentary Blackfish helped exposed people to the reality of what was really going on behind the scenes at SeaWorld, with everything including their trainers to the overall well-being of the orca whales. Not only has Blackfish exposed how SeaWorld has shortened the lifespan of orcas in captivity, but it shined some light on how the orcas were living, how the orca’s behavior changed, how trainers
Almost all whales die of bacteria in the lungs or lack of exercise. While Seaworld claims that these shows inspire children, the whales are getting sick. The whales are forced to to tricks for food. None of these stunts would naturally happen in the wild. Seaworld is in it for the money.
According to a 2016 investigation by the San Antonio Express-News, 60 percent of orca deaths at Sea World's three parks were caused by infection. The report also found that, in the past two years, eight whales and dolphins have died at the San Antonio park, and in the past 30 years, 150 infection-related deaths occurred at the park's three locations" (Gibbens 2017). Orcas have died in the process of creating entertainment for viewers. Some deaths were unstoppable and others could have easily been solved. With the many killer whales killed at SeaWorld, there is no way to reverse the pain caused by the company further understood as despicable creatures created by fortune.
Natural Selection is the long gradual process in which Biological traits either become more or less common in a population as a function of the effect of inherited traits on the differential reproductive success of organisms interacting with their environment. In Darwin’s work The Origin of Species he also mentioned evidence for the Theory of Evolution from his voyage around the world on The H.M.S. Beagle. The Origin of Species is probably the most influential work on evolutionary biology. The Origin of Species will help prove my thesis because it introduces the ideas that we base on evolutionary biology today.
This process is known as natural selection, which explains how Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution can occur. Natural selection is an important component of evolution. It occurs when some members of a population are better fit for survival and proliferation than others in that population. The environment in which organisms live plays a large part in natural selection as well.
Charles Darwin’s theory of Natural Selection is defined as “The most critical mechanism of evolutionary change; refers to genetic change or changes in the frequencies of certain traits in population due to differential reproductive success between individuals.” Natural Selection involves organisms and individuals adapting to their environment. It is the key to evolution to which it occurs over several generations. Its process encourages beneficial genes to be passed to further generation and discourage the passage of harmful or less valuable genes. It is a gradual process where some biological traits become more common, while some become less common.
Although the theory of evolution caused a stir on its own, what was most important to the Nature versus Nurture debate was the idea of our species changing over time. The idea of Natural Selection also contributed tot he debate. The phrase ‘Nature versus Nurture’ was coined by English Polymath, Francis Galton in his 1874 publication of English Men in Science: Their Nature and Nurture. Galton was Darwin’s cousin and he said in his biography that ‘The publication in 1859 of the Origin of Species by Charles Darwin made a marked epoch in my own mental development, as it did in that of human thought generally.’
