One of the foundations of sustainable development is efficient environmental management (UNEP 2002). However, balancing the needs of current generations without compromising the environment for future generations poses to be quite problematic. A number of environmental decision-making instruments have been developed in an attempt to ensure that development is sustainable. One of the most popular of these is environmental impact assessment (EIA). This essay will be based on the strengths and limitations of an Environmental Impact Assessment. Environmental impact assessment is referred to as a policy and management tool for both planning and decision-making (Glasson et al, 2005). This essay will be divided into four sections. The first section …show more content…
EIAs promote the development that is sustainable and maximizes the usage of resources and management opportunities (Glasson, 1999). EIA is recognized internationally as an imperative tool to be used in guiding individuals on the path to sustainable development. Therefore, a crucial purpose of an EIA is to promote environmentally sound and sustainable development through the identification of appropriate enhancement and mitigation measures (UNEP, 2002). EIA has to ensure that development proposals do not challenge critical resources and ecological functions, welfare, lifestyle and livelihood of the communities and people who depend on them (UNEP, …show more content…
These assessments are often poor. Alternatives put forward tend to be unrealistic in order to favour the option the applicant wants to implement. The regulations also require the applicant to illustrate the need and desirability of the project, which is often not done (Hutton and Tefford, 2003). Impact mitigation Insufficient information provided on recommended mitigation measures; little indication of the practicality, reliability and potential effectiveness of the mitigation measures and problems with measures which are recommended that don’t address identified impacts. Unexpected impact Follow-up sometimes reveals unexpected impacts related to a project. Unexpected impacts are ones which were not anticipated or dealt with in the EIR. They may be positive or negative; but because they are unexpected there are unlikely to be mitigation measures in place to deal with them (Lawrence, 2003). The follow-up process therefore needs to be adaptive enough to cope with this The purpose of an EIA is to present information, so that it can inform the decision-making process (Canter, 1996). In order to do so the information contained in an EIA must be adequate and clearly presented. Review should form an integral part of EIA (DEAT,

We want to give our clients relief from the stressful, and seemingly complex tasks of construction through the following: Quality assurance.
Even though the standards are uniform in all counties and cities, both are permitted to include more restrictive regulations which could depend upon the weather, geological and topographical circumstances. These adoptions must nonetheless be documented and submitted to the commission. As areas and towns differ in conditions of topographical and geological circumstances the Title isn't too restrictive. These problems could be determined by a few factors like the place and its susceptibility to natural disasters such as mudslide, earthquakes or floods. Counties in areas exposed to earthquakes, for instance, restrict development of high rise structures.
Health Impact Assessment-Provides advice to communities on how they can stay healthy- by evaluating a potential plan, project or policy before it is “built or implemented”(CDC.2015). For example: Maryland state code requires fire sprinklers to be installed in new and renovated single-family homes. Statistics show an 80% decrease in the chance of death in homes equipped with sprinklers. This regulation would also be considered Health in All Policies(HiAP) due to its cross sectoral nature.
The targets for this goal are going to be very difficult to measure as climate change is constantly evolving and data will therefore never be specific. “Measuring resilience and adaptive capacity to climate hazards and natural disasters in all countries” is going to be more complex than just collecting the occurrences of these climatic events. Similarly, every government is capable of observing and collecting data on their progress when considering the implementation of measures in target 13.2 and of education programs and the organization of awareness campaigns in target 13.3. However, the difficulty of measuring these targets is that their assessment is based on subjectivity, except for their financial aspect.
Likewise, There seems to be a higher number of negative effects this proposal would have then is does positives. A small number of these include; a loss of ecosystem, a decline in tourism, environment and water pollution, and
One specific example of this has to do with the proposed mining in northern Minnesota. Polymet, a large mining company, has proposed a big nickel and copper mine, but first they must meet extremely strict requirements and acquire many approvals. Much of the concern has to do with water contamination. If there is any way that processes from the mining cause water contamination, then the mining will not be approved. The protection of Minnesota geology is extremely important, especially water.
Since the beginning of mankind, there have been many examples of humans developing both positive and negative relationships with the environment. From early Native Americans preciously cultivating and restoring their natural surroundings, to large manufacturing conglomerates of the modern age polluting air and water without regard, the interaction between humans and their environment has been both productive and destructive in various ways. By evaluating that it is much more important for a developing civilization/nation to conserve and protect its resources rather than fully develop them, we can completely understand the unique impacts that the human race has had on the environment, and how significant the negative gaffes and consequently,
Address any variances in budget reporting from previous reporting period. Include: (1) Estimated Total Project Budget, (2) Estimated Construction Budget, and (3) Dollars Expended to Date. If there is a Financing Agreement for this project, provide an update. If none, indicate that. Section 5 – Project Scope and/or Quality Items Indicate any adjustments or considerations that impact or change the project scope or quality (such as pending change orders, standards waivers, etc.)
Sub-Section 3.3.02.05 Monitoring Use of Information Technology Systems New Statement UnitedHealth Group owned workstations will continuously be monitored for unauthorized applications. Any unauthorized or unapproved application will be alerted to the Computer Incident Response Team for immediate remediation. Explanation • Appsense will audit all UHG owned workstations and virtual machines for any applications being run for the first time. Reports will be made available and sent to teams that continuously audit endpoint applications.
This instrument will show the change in consideration that involves “Eagle Memorial Nursing Center” (EMNC) in how they can return to a well-functioning nursing facility and decreased its number of lawsuits. However, the first step to demonstrate the reliability and validity for a plan to collect the data starts with the document review of researching the internal record that is available, including monthly reports, financial documents, purchase orders, activity logs, etc. Nevertheless, the advantage of using the document review method for records from your organization is the ease of data collection, assuming the data already exist and no additional effort needs to be made to collect
This is the first spot where we begin to see environmental planning started to form, this is where regulations
ASSESSMENT/AUDIT 1. Understanding of why it is important to measure sustainability and the associated problems and conflicts of different indicator sets and types Evidence – It is really difficult to find exact concept for measuring sustainability. For instance the measurement of life parameters is differ between different cultures and individuals. So, different solutions will be required to be found for many different communities. However; we should not assume that things we cannot measured easily is not important.
One of the major impacts it has to the county is its environment. Environment is our surroundings (nonliving or living things around us). For example a tree is apart of our environment. It is very essential e to protect their environment around us because one day it will all disappear and especially when people need it the most. It has affected the environment by have deforestation problems.
The conclusion conveyed at the end of this paper, will be that sustainable development is a concept with weaknesses however, the strengths outweigh them. To begin with, the concept of sustainable development famously culminated in 1987 with the United Nations 'Commission on Environment and Development ' also known as the 'Brundtland Report ' (Everard & Longhurt, 2017; pp. 1244). The article introduced, the most widely known definition of Sustainable development as "Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987).
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) states that environmental education is vital in imparting an inherent respect for nature amongst society and in enhancing public environmental awareness. UNESCO emphasises the role of environmental education in safeguarding future global developments of societal quality of life, through the protection of the environment, eradication of poverty, minimization of inequalities and insurance of sustainable
