Adversity In The Scarlet Ibis

In the short story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst the concept of survival is demonstrated. The narrator 's brother was born with a disability which caused him to not be able to do normal things a child would do. Later on the narrator would begin teaching his brother, Doodle things so he could be like the others at school. The narrator taught Doodle how to walk, so shortly after Doodle was walking the narrator decided to teach him other things.

Winston Churchill once said, "Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts." In other words, Churchill stated that it is not the act of success that matters, it is the journey that made you successful that counts. In the book "The Scarlet Ibis" and the film Simon Birch they tell the story of a physically impaired boy who puts his disability aside to defy the odds and triumph before ultimately dying. Doodle and Simon were alike and different in various instances, the main themes were; their brother figure, their parents, and the major symbols in the story.

The Scarlet Ibis is told in first person retrospective. The readers are introduced to a story that has happened to the narrator in the past. In this particular situation, Brother is reminiscing of the time when his brother Doodle was alive. The way the story is long greatly affects the way the reader interprets the story.

In James Hurst 's short story "The Scarlet Ibis" Hurst shows images of birds and how to watch your actions and the consequences that come with it, consequences can lead to life long regrets. The first spot Hurst 's shows birds is "Dead birds are bad luck, especially red dead birds. " Regret symbolizes this quote because Doodle touched the dead bird, and Aunt Nicey told him not to touch it because it was bad luck. Doodle did anyway and he died later in the story.

There are 56.7 million people in the United States have a physical disability, that is 19 percent of the population of the whole country. Imagine each and every one of those people being hated and shamed by their family, specifically their older siblings. Older siblings are supposed to be a role model for the younger children in the family but in “The Scarlet Ibis” the narrator was a prideful, spiteful, and murderous person who held shame and hate in his heart for his invalid younger brother. The narrator was the older brother to an invalid child who could not even walk, yet the narrator hated him for what he was and felt shame that he had to associate with a kid such as his brother. The narrator was the cause of his younger brother’s death

I. Introduction Attention Getter Before becoming a writer, James Hurst was young engineer, but, he switched to a musical career. During his musician days, he auditioned for the opera;however, he failed and supported himself as a writer and night bank clerk. “The Scarlet Ibis,” was first published in the Atlantic Monthly, where he made his writing debut with his touching story between the two brothers.

Eventually the narrator taught Doodle to walk, then decided to teach Doodle other abilities that would make Doodle be considered “Normal.” The narrator was so engrossed in this task that he did not notice that Doodle could not keep up. “I made him swim until he turned blue and row until he couldn't lift an oar. Wherever we went, I purposely walked fast, and although he kept up, his face turned red and his eyes became glazed. Once, he could go no further, so he collapsed on the ground and began to cry.”

In the short story, “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, the narrator is static and stays selfish throughout the entire story. In the beginning of the story, the narrator finds out his brother isn’t “normal” so he threatens and brainstorms ways to kill him; “It was bad enough having an invalid brother… so I began to make plans to kill him.” The narrator was so self centered and couldn’t handle not getting the “normal” brother he wanted, he was going to end his life. In the middle of the story, the narrator says, “ I was so embarrassed at having a brother who couldn’t walk so I set out to teach him.” He only wanted to teach him to walk for himself, he didn’t even care how hard it would be for his brother or if he wanted to walk.

Murphy lacks mobility and sensation in his lower body other than the feeling of occasional muscle spasms, and has limited movement in his upper body below the neck including his arms. Murphy writes the story as it recounts events throughout his entire life, from childhood onwards. He was sixty-two when he wrote the novel. The story provides Murphy’s anthropological commentary on the life of a person with a disability and how society views and treats people with disabilities (Murphy, 1990). Murphy’s performance patterns both support and inhibit his occupational engagement.

Pride is Ignorance Disability is a physical or mental condition that limits a person's movement, senses, or activities. " The Scarlet Ibis," a short story written by James Hurst, focuses on the relationship between two brothers: the narrator and his disabled brother, Doodle. Doodle is born when the narrator, Brother, is only six years old. Since the narrator is young and does not know how to cope with a situation like this, he plans to kill Doodle. The prideful narrator wants a brother he can play with and is disappointed and embarrassed that he will not be like a regular boy.

In “The Scarlet Ibis”, James Hurst shows that one should not take the easy way out by submitting to one’s obstacles because in the end, it won’t be worth it. “I heaved him up again collapsed… ‘I just can’t do it.’ [Doodle says]” (Hurts 598). An example of the theme is when Doodle submits to his obstacle, which is his brother setting a goal for him he doesn’t care to achieve. By not facing his problems, The narrator’s younger brother’s problems get worse, and somewhat lead to his death.

Guilty Without a Doubt In The Scarlet Ibis, Brother and Doodles story is a perfect example as to why pride can be a destructive force. Doodle was pushed to the extreme by his brother. His brothers selfish pride took over his life and he just lost control, he couldn't handle it and his pride, and as a result an innocent life was lost, therefore Brother is guilty of Doodles death.

“Pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed that bears two vines, life and death” (Hurst 2). This is how James Hurst describes pride in his heart-wrenching short story, “The Scarlet Ibis.” What speaks to me most about this quote is its profound truth. For the majority of people, pride is either a positive or negative thing, but what Hurst and I seem to agree about is the fact that pride can be both. It is an undeniable symptom of the human condition, a tool that can either create or destroy, and is responsible for the best and worst parts of history.

Scott Hamilton once stated, “The only disability in life is a bad attitude.” Disability is only an obstacle in a person's life, but it does not set the identity of that person. John Steinbeck's novel shows how disabled people are treated differently by writing about their heartbreak and sorrow. Many individuals with disabilities feel that a disability is a wall blocking them from achieving their goals. In our society, people are told what to be and what to do with their disability, but one should have the choice to carve their pathway to success.

“Single-Handed Cooking” by JJ Goode speaks about his disability and how although he acknowledges it as an obstacle it isn 't one they aren 't continuously ready to overcome. He uses the example of cooking. It 's a task that for most does not require the intense focus that he needs ,yet it doesn 't stop him from cooking dishes ranging in difficulty. With each dish he successfully creates its a way to prove himself, while the mistakes no matter the cause are a failure. Which is why he continues to tackle demanding recipes because each time he achieves a great end result its another accomplishment.
