By women seeking regular health assessments they are taking steps to live a longer, healthier life (no author, 2015).

Roles of the Professional Nurse The role of the professional nurse in today's healthcare setting continues to expand as our healthcare delivery system in the United States changes. Historically, nurses have delivered care in a system that has been "illness" centered. Increases in knowledge of disease, coupled with a desire to decrease the costs of delivering health care have shifted the U.S. model of care to one of prevention (IOM, 2010, p. 1-1). The professional nurse continues to have eight interrelated roles in caring for their patients.

Ensuring millions of Americans have access to free preventive screening and care will reduce the burden on the health care system in the future. In other words, diseases detected earlier are less costly to the health care system compared to those detected during the later stages. Diseases that are detected during the progressive stage of the illness are more costly to the health care system and the individuals. More importantly, individuals are more likely to recover from a disease that is detected during the early stages which will improve the health and well-being of the US population. In order to achieve the goals established by the ACA, different components were created to ensure a holistic approach to health care and services provided to individuals.

The Affordable Care Act has shifted focus on health and wellness of patient populations urging hospitals to do a community needs assessment and come up with a strategy to address these needs. Nurses are at the heart of this movement, providing the necessary skills, experience and expertise to address the needs of the population being served (Shamian,
Living a healthy life is a struggle to some American citizens, being able to afford to be healthy poses a significant challenge to some Americans. With the costs of a hospital visit potentially being greater than a thousand dollars, many Americans choose to forego treatment and hope they recover from their ailment without medical attention. To combat this issue, president Obama introduced the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, to encourage Americans to sign up for health insurance to be able to afford healthcare. The ACA provides subsidies to low income families and individuals, fines businesses who do not provide health insurance to full time employees, expand existing federal and state health plans, and sets a standard for health insurance policies. Additionally, since the introduction of the ACA into the American healthcare system, insurance premiums have not increased at the same rate they have previously.
