The Fair Housing Act of 1968 was one of the initial acts that began to address this housing inequality, and fight against the discrimination that was often seen in the past, in regards to low income people of color being able to rent or buy a house. Subsequent interventions and programs were then created in an attempt to provide many marginalized communities and families with the opportunity to rent or buy a home. Programs like the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program, Low Income Housing Tax Credit programs, and Community Housing Development Organizations have attempted to amend the inequalities in housing, which in some regard can be attributed to systematic racism in the United States through our history. These programs have had successes in providing accessible and affordable housing to their targeted marginalized populations but some other programs that could be even more effective in utilizing are the Boulder Community Housing Assistance Program (CHAP) on a more national level, as well as Singapore’s housing program policies. While there have been many organizations that have tried to make an impact on the housing inequality that has been witnessed against low income communities of color, there is still more work to be done.

As outlined in chapter 10 of the course text, inequality in housing and wealth is a major problem. The United States is described to be the most unequal countries in the western hemisphere. But with the inequalities when it comes to wealth, the United States is one of the richest countries in the world. Wealth is the sum total of a person’s assets. These assets include, cash in the bank and value of all properties, not only land but houses, cars, stocks, and bonds, and retirements savings.

With little more money than homeless folk, many underprivileged people reside in slums where the streets are broken and the homes are falling apart. Alana Semuels reports in her article that “living in slums is rising at an extraordinary pace”, mostly due to urban sprawling and demands for capital in cities (Semuels). The problem for many of the packed and overcrowded towns is that they are “without sanitary water or basic roads”(Semuels), causing great burdens and peril for citizens. Due to the unkempt resources, birth rates in slums tend to be lower than those in other areas while life expectancy will be shorter. Even with the creation of many government programs, such as those that place people in newly-built affordable housing, the abandoned neighborhoods still require maintenance or a crisis like a poor child “eating lead paint,” because “the building had not been updated since the 60’s”(Semuels).

Gentrification is the process of renovating and improving a house or district so that it conforms to middle-class taste. Real Estate investors usually take low-income places that they feel have a chance to prosper economically, and turn them into areas that attract the middle and upper class workers. In doing so they feel like the low-income areas will be safer and more appealing, attracting more people to visit and live there. An improvement to a poor district sounds beautiful, but is gentrification as great as it’s sought out to be? Many residents have their doubts about gentrification due to the idea that the costs of their living will go up and they will be driven out of their neighborhoods.

The American dream is the hope to acquire currency, large homes, raise a middle-class family, and pursue what brings people joy in life. But in the year 2016, the American dream becomes hard to believe in. The American dream may still exist, but it is not equally accessible to all Americans. This is true because the American dream is not affordable for everyone, it is not available to everyone from different degrees of education, and race and ethnicity creates large social barriers.

Many people who lost their homes moved to neglected sections of towns. Half a million people who live in border colonias—unregulated subdivisions that lacks piped drinking water, sewerage, electricity and other basic most people take for granted. The government had to subsidize housing projects using taxpayer’s money. Thus, maintaining status quo is inefficient and against the Constitutional right of all Americans to have better housing facilities. 2. Intensify enforcement of the housing

For example, these individuals should be receiving drug therapies or self-management services so that they can assist them more efficiently and help them control their conditions. The issue of homelessness in America has been evident since the early 1600’s. Across the country men, women and children spend their nights on the streets not knowing when or if they will ever find a permanent home. States and federal officials or city councils have tried to alleviate or at least reduce the number of homeless over the last several decades at a city, state or national level but it continues to be an ongoing problem. There is a multitude of factors that account for the growing homeless population that affects each state in the country differently. Though there are many contributing factors that contribute to the amount of people living on the street at any given night in the U.S.

Every decade our population gets older and a whole new generation of seniors comes along with a new set of attitudes and expectations as to what they want from an assisted living facility. And now that people are living longer, there is a much greater need for these facilities. They can provide a refuge to many family members that may become severely burdened by the arduous task of taking care of a loved one who can no longer take care of themselves. When simple tasks such as bathing and feeding become near impossible to manage alone, not to mention driving to the store and shopping, decisions about placement into a home become paramount. Most important to the family members is the ability of the facility to provide the adequate care that is needed for their loved ones.
