African Americans In Higher Education

Since historically black institutions are smaller, the environment feels more like a family. A historically black institution gives African American students a platform to be heard where they are comfortable and safe. It is an environment where they are the majority, unlike everyday life where they are a minority. At a predominately white institution, African American students can feel lost on campus and feel as though they do not have a voice on the issues they encounter.

She states, “The reason for the more overall positive experience for Black students attending HBCUs than those attending PWIs can closely be linked to the unique institutional climate that HBCUs provide for students of color.” She talks about how HBCUs foster a “more encouraging and understanding for Black students” (Biehlmann) because of the higher percentage of Black faculty and administrators as role models. Biehlmann highlights how the presence of Black professors and administrators creates a setting that is in tune with the “specific knowledge of the Black experience in America,” (Biehlmann). Also, Blacks are the majority at HBCUs which can help them feel more comfortable and involved in their classes and campus. Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are institutions of higher education in the United States founded primarily for the education of African Americans. Prior to the mid-1960s, HBCUs were virtually the only institutions open to African Americans due to the vast majority of predominantly white institutions prohibiting qualified African Americans from acceptance during the time of segregation. As such, they are institutional products of an era of discrimination and socially constructed racism against African Americans (Joseph, 2013). The National Council for Black Studies, Inc., developed this slogan. They wanted to “provide a fundamental understanding of those varied forces that have shaped the Afro-American experience in the Western Hemisphere.” They educate students with a “basic understanding of the special problems of Afro-Americans in contemporary life.” It means to establish a standard of teaching in Afro-American studies programs. They recruit Black Scholars to properly teach the courses and conduct research.

Honestly speaking, Miseducation of the Negro and The Black Revolution on Campus have caused me to arouse feelings of appreciation and inspiration. They have enlightened me to the hardships African American students had to endure in order to obtain recognition as elite students capable of academic success and leadership. It also revealed the passionate efforts of persistent pleads and drastic rhetorics these students had to utilize in exchange for the inclusion of African American histories/studies in the academic curriculums. The Reconstruction period was an important first step in the effort to secure civil rights and economic power for the former slaves. During the period of 1865 to 1905, the lives of African Americans in the South changed vastly. Civil rights for the African American community were ensured by the Reconstruction Amendments which outlawed slavery, granted citizenship to everyone born within the United States, and guaranteed the right to vote. For many African Americans, freedom meant independence from white control. In the wake of advancing Union armies, millions of black southerners sought to secure that freedom with economic opportunity, which for many meant land ownership.

Of that number combined 78% are African American, 12% Caucasian, 1.8% Hispanic; 1.2% Asian. In 2014 81% of students were African-American while Caucasians were 6%. So from 2014 to 2015 in one year it has grown 6% in Whites to attend this institution. The audacity of whites came their various oppressions before landing in America, Douglass states, “that they had conquered the sea, and had conquered the land, but that it remained for them to conquer their prejudices,” (Douglass, 568). Educated philosophers preach the Negro inferior to the white man, Du Bois states, “Many Americans social philosophers still persist in ascribing to Negro inferiority,” (Du Bois, 42). In today it is not directly stated, but rather suggested. White is still ideal, from personal experience, some private schools in Washington D.C have a minority cap to only allow an exact number of students of color. The schools where more students of color were allowed had funding issues, thus making it difficult to have the latest tools and labs to teach in.

Another thing that places students of color at a disadvantage in college admissions is the persisting cultural bias in high-stakes testing. “High-stakes” tests are those that are tied to major consequences, such as admission to college, or even high school graduation. Fair education reform advocates have long been citing an extensive record of standardized testing concerns, many of which relate to racial bias and discrimination. As researcher and author Harold Berlak explains in the journal Rethinking Education: Standardized testing perpetuates institutionalized racism and contributes to the achievement gap between whites and minorities. African American Studies was a great experience. Has opened my eyes to my surrounding and the world around me. This course with Dr. Sheba Lo, was something out of me confront zone.
