Odyssey Week 3 Summary

Katrina Mayer once said, “A book is a magical thing that lets you travel to faraway places without you ever leaving your chair.” This quote clearly applies to The Odyssey; this ancient greek epic (The Odyssey by Homer) follows the story of Odysseus of Ithaca and his lengthy voyage home following the Trojan war. The book itself is an ageless classic, however it wouldn't be the same without Homer’s unique use of figurative language to depict this story. His two most effective literary tools were his epic similes and personification. His epic similes gave a romantic description of critical, emotion filled scenes.

In these three text, different ideas are emphasized. Homer's story “The Odyssey emphasizes the heroism of Odysseus, the magic powers of the sirens, steps Odysseus uses to get past the sirens. On the other hand, In the video “O Brother Where Art Thou” it emphasized that Pete gets turned into a frog, the men drink moonshine, and the music of the siren song. In the final text, Atwood's poem “Siren Song” emphasizes that the Siren does not like being stuck on the island, and the content of the song was very tedious. Not only do authors emphasize things, they leave things out.

The Odyssey, written by Homer during the eighth century, has several core themes which include destiny, perseverance, and loyalty. The Penelopiad, told by Penelope as the narrator along with the twelve maids that were hung in The Odyssey honorable point of view. After reading The Odyssey and then The Penelopiad some discrepancies were identified which left readers questioning what really happened between Odysseus and Penelope. In the beginning of The Odyssey, Odysseus had recently won a contest for Penelope’s hand in marriage, in which he cheated but won her hand in any case. Penelope was then married to Odysseus and went to live in Ithaca.

In the Odyssey written by Homer, The Real Reasons we Explore Space by Michael Griffin, and They Journey by Mary Oliver, they support the idea that people embark on journeys to find out new things about others and learn more of themselves. The following examples in these texts were written by people of very different backgrounds. Homer wrote the Iliad and the Odyssey which is a continuation of the Iliad’s story. People have long argued whether Homer actual existed or if he was falsely credited for the creation of these books. The ancient Greeks credited him with the writing of these tales.

A Man of Loyalty, Patience, and Determination In the epic poem The Odyssey, written by Homer, Odysseus’ heroic deeds are recounted through a narrative that describes his arduous journey from the Trojan War to his homeland of Ithaka. This journey makes Odysseus an epic hero. An epic hero is a brave and noble character who is admired for his achievements. Traits of an epic hero are necessary for the journey Odysseus goes on to reach his homeland.

This simile highlights a stratagem adopted by Odysseus to help him and his men escape the cave. Odysseus selects four men to help him drive a sharp object into Polyphemus' eye; however, this tactic is ineffective because there remain guards at the cave's entrance who are tasked with catching any Greek that attempts to escape. This simile exemplifies Odysseus' wisdom as a war strategist, and his application of intellectual tactics to out-maneuver the enemy. After this plan proved to be a failure, Odysseus hid with the rams and successfully escaped. The consistent strategies Odysseus came up with to defeat the enemy even when they proved to be failures just indicated that he is wise and capable to learn from his mistakes.

The definition of a journey is extremely broad; it is simply to travel from one place to the next and consists of a start, a middle, and an end. A journey is able to be delightful or distressing; the possibilities are endless. Humans lives are one humongous journey. Furthermore, it is common for humans to write about these journeys and include them in literature. The Odyssey by Homer takes place after the Trojan War and tells the arduous and frustrating story of a demigod and his journey to return home.

Despite such darkness and brevity, both Creusa and Achilles are not shocked or daunted by the appearance of their loved ones, but instead comforted. In both Homer’s, Odyssey and Vergil’s, Aeneid, the presence of Creusa and Achille, create a link between the living and the dead. Despite a steady trading relationship, Mesopotamian and Egyptian societies have very dissimilar views on life and the afterlife. Indeed, Mesopotamian civilization certainly had much stricter views of life and the afterlife. This is likely a reflection of the frequent nature of wars and violence in this highly urbanized society (83). As a result, their views of the fragility of their mortality seemed to be pessimistically realistic. They seemed to accept that their gods gave them this life and nothing else.

The relationships between the Greek gods and mortals have always been complicated. The gods can be generous and supportive, but also harsh and destructive towards the humans. They claim to be all powerful beings with unlimited power and influence, but in truth, they are far more human than they are perceived. They meddle with human lives, not because they are wise, but because of their own selfish reasons. In Homer’s

The heroes’ quest is a common archetype that occurs in many forms of storytelling. This way of writing occurs used in movies, books, and art. A hero’s quest is a method of writing which consists of adventure, difficult decisions, victory, and then returning as a changed or transformed version of oneself. One of the important and most used hero quest aspects is enduring darkness. Usually, darkness is a journey, and not one that is a fun enjoyable ride.

What is the definition of a good person? The view of a good person changes as time goes on. However, the Odyssey is still the foundation of human morality. The Odyssey, created by Homer, is an ancient telling of a man named Odysseus and his journey home from the Trojan War. The morals found in the Odyssey show readers the benefit of being able to view situations from multiple points of view.

The Greek’s Inferno: A Comparison of Greek and Catholic Underworlds For nearly 2000 years, various religions continue to perpetuate the idea of an underworld, or a place after death. For the Greeks, much of their mythology deals with Gods, Goddesses, and the afterlife. Catholics, however, base their idea of an afterlife with three levels: Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory, a place for people who must experience a purification of sorts. Numerous Greek writers wrote about the idea of their underworld, or Hades, one of the most famous being Homer, writer of The Odyssey. The Odyssey details the hero Odysseus’ journey back to his homeland of Ithaca.

Back in ancient Greek culture, people enjoyed coming up with stories to explain the many wonders of the world, including things such as the seasons, death, and the weather. They created gods and goddesses, each with their own special abilities. One of the many significant parts of Greek Mythology was the River Styx, which transported new souls to their designated part of the Underworld, where they would stay for eternity. The River Styx resided in the Underworld and served as a border between the living and the dead.

Several characters in ancient literature were willing to risk their life for some cause or goal. Through this essay we will be taking an inside on the work of Homer in the Iliad and Sophocles in Antigone to look for evidence of what ancient Greeks though it was worth dying for during this time. During Ancient Greek literature times they had a different perspective of what we would think were reasonable causes for dying. One of the mains purpose of the Greeks is the fame that comes after death. Theses two books show us exactly what were the most essentials ideas of what they considered was worth dying for.
