The American Revolution
Alfred F. Young and Lin-Manuel Miranda write stories that fall back to the same time period of the American Revolution. In Young’s book, The Shoemaker and the Tea Party, the story of George Robert Twelves Hewes and his experience and a lower class shoemaker during the Boston Tea Party and The Revolutionary war. Later we see his life 50 years after the Tea Party. In the musical, Hamilton, Miranda tells the story of Hamilton from before the Revolutionary War until his death in 1804.
In Alfred F. Young’s book, The Shoemaker and the Tea Party, George Robert Twelves Hewes remembers how the Revolutionary War was about equality and recognition. Hewes remembers the Revolutionary war as being about equality when he remembers a moment when he met John Hancock. Hewes was one of the lower class, he was extremely poor as a shoemaker. Whereas, Hancock was one of the elitest in the country. Hancock sat down with Hewes as a young boy and thanked him with a coin. Throughout much of the first act, Hamilton is putting his life together. Hamilton meets a group of sisters called The Schuyler Sisters and fell in love with Eliza. Hamilton was willing to fight of love. Then Hamilton joins the Continental Army during the revolution, and has a goal to command the military. After the war, Hamilton and Eliza have a son, Philip. The second act shows us Hamilton’s goals of taking control within the governmental system. Hamilton has several debates with multiple leads in government. Hamilton and Jefferson have multiple altercations within the government during the first planning stages of the government. I believe that the persistence of class inequality in America stood out the most about the Revolutionary era. In the book The Shoemaker and the Tea Party, George Robert Twelves Hewes, was one the many people who took part in revolutionary acts against British rule. He is also the person that The Shoemaker and the Tea party was mainly about in the first portion of the book. Most would think that someone who had taken part in something as significant as the first steps leading up the revolutionary war would be honored, respected, and even to a certain extent taken care of by his country. George took part in events such as the destruction of tea, Boston Massacre, along with other acts that mobs partaken in, in Boston.

The perspectives from political leaders like were recognized through their published papers, such as James Otis who argued about equal representation as British subjects, followed by Paine’s strong remarks against the separation between the colonies and Britain which resulted in the motivation for the unification of the colonies to begin fighting for their freedom. The American Revolution is arguably the turning point of American history as it resulted in somewhat of a significant, positive change in politics, economics, and society as a whole. However, from 1775 to 1800, the effects of the revolution on the American society were subtle as most principles glorified by revolutionists contradicted the examples set forth by colonial reality. Perhaps most alike to revolutionary beliefs was the American economy and how it participated in free trade or encouraged the independence of hard labor. Politically, the states did apply Enlightenment and republican ideas as promised, but more often than not, the benefits of such ideas were limited to rich, land-owning, protestant, white men. On July 4, 1826, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, both patriotic leaders in the Revolution, died (Young 140). “Their deaths confirmed the popular sense that the country was losing its last links with the revolutionary generation” (Young 141). In an attempt to keep the memory of the Revolution alive, Hewes went back to Boston for a Fourth of July celebration that commemorated veterans of the Revolution (Young 143). As a result, Hewes was finally able to get the recognition and honor that he deserved.
The Shoemaker and the Tea Party describes two different interesting points. Hughes is the main character who a is representative of the lower white male class who experienced the removal of deference in the region of the North. Hughes is thus symbolic of the heart of the American Revolution as the people at this time are seeking equality. The other important thesis to be noted in this book, is the Boston Tea Party.

The road to the American Revolution consisted of several events, which escalated to the war that began April 19, 1775, as the tensions between the American colonies and the British Government advanced towards breaking point.
It’s been over 200 years since the original thirteen colonies of America fought their revolutionary war against Great Britain, in hopes of achieving their independence. The term “Revolutionary” is an instantaneous change or shift that promotes equal rights, liberty, and freedom. So, while some may argue that the revolution was a turning point for America, The American revolution in this case is not revolutionary since slavery was still present, minority groups did not gain rights, and British ideals and tactics were still being used in the new government. One of the crucial pieces of evidence that this “revolution” could not be considered revolutionary is because of the slavery still taking place even after the war ended. Gordon S. Wood, “the preeminent historian of the Revolution”, is a well known American historian who has received several awards such as the Pulitzer and Bancroft Prize for his historical books. In his book, The American Revolution: A History, he breaks down the key events based on his experiences and knowledge on the Revolutionary period. Wood was born in Concord, Massachusetts on November 27,1933. Wood teaches at many liberal renowned universities such as Brown, Cambridge, Northwestern , and Harvard. Now being eighty one years old, he recently retired from Brown University and lives in Providence, Rhode Island.
The Revolutionary war was not revolutionary because it did not protect some of people’s rights, made lives harder, and left Americans in despair. The Declaration of Independence clearly stated that all men are created equal and unalienable rights (Document 2). This, however, is not shown through the social classes. The Revolutionary War was fought to bring freedom, but that undoubtedly does not show. First and foremost, Abigail Adams wrote “Remember the ladies, and be more generous and favourable to them than your ancestors.
You can tell these are different social classes because of some people wearing fancy wigs and others wearing no shoes. This proves that the American Revolution was revolutionary because after the revolution people are starting to disregard social classes and are starting to treat everyone equally. In modern day American people no longer care about the social class of one another, they just treat each other as equals. The War of Independence was indeed revolutionary because it’s ideas helped bring equality to women and African Americans, it paved the way for many great political changes and because it influenced many social changes.
Each one had their own view of how to do this, but it was a main goal of both politicians. Alexander Hamilton was a founding father and leader of the Federalist party. Hamilton wanted America to be just like Great Britain. He believed that in the best interest for the country, the government should be run by elite people with lots of money. Hamilton was The United States Secretary of Treasury, during this time, and proposed many of his reform ideas to Congress.
Hamilton wanted to create public credit with a treasury system, a national bank, a mint, and increase manufacturing which would help unify the country. On the other hand, there was Jefferson, who opposed a strong central government. He argued that the “wealthy would gain at the expense of ordinary Americans and that Hamilton’s political economy would corrupt the morality of citizens and undermine the social conditions essential to republican government”(Powerpoint). The country would opt for an approach closer to Hamilton’s views. One of the first acts was the National Banking Act.
