Fahrenheit 451 Alienation Theme

Is Bradbury's Fantasy Becoming Our Reality Technological growth is one of the biggest moving innovations in our everyday lives. In the novel Fahrenheit 451 written by Ray Bradbury speaking about the future society where books are outlawed and no one thinks for themselves. Bradbury speaks about the struggle that certain characters have trying to involve books back into society. In our everyday lives, we are constantly flooded with social media and always have a need to pick up our phones. Children are beginning to learn keyboarding at a much younger age, as opposed to working on their penmanship.

From children two adults, almost everyone can relate. In the 21st-century, people have become more dependent on technology just like in Fahrenheit 451. Technology is a distraction for all. Mildred uses technology the most, And in some ways is an immature adult.

Imagine a world where firemen start fires instead of putting them out. Fahrenheit 451 is set in a utopian, or dystopian to us, society, where books are burned and people rarely have real social interaction. Although Fahrenheit 451 seems nowhere close to our society, we are both alike and different to their world. The freedom of information is both very different and somewhat alike.

In Fahrenheit 451, technology, violence and distractions are used as a warning to society. First of all, technology is constantly around their society and is getting better. If this happens to our society many would not be engaged with their life Secondly, in the book distractions are created to create a better society, but this creates emotion to be fake. This could change society drastically now days .

"I was not predicting the future, I was trying to prevent it" (Bradbury). The world illustrated in Fahrenheit 451 isn 't that far off from our own. Technology has become a very influential part of everyone 's lives, and has control over people’s actions and thoughts. Ray Bradbury uses the themes mass media, conformity vs. individuality, and censorship in his dystopian novel, Fahrenheit 451, to capture a futuristic world in which books are illegal and technology is consuming society. Mass media is a significant theme throughout the book, Fahrenheit 451.

Guy Montag a firefighter but instead he starts the fires. In the book Fahrenheit 451, Montag Mildred, and Beatty are impacted by the alienation. By looking at Montag, one can see he is lost which is important because he has to go to other people for help. Everyone around him was alienated from the real world and believe everything they hear.

Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, is a uniquely shocking and provocative novel about a dystopian society set in a future where reading is outlawed, thinking is considered a sin, technology is at its prime, and human interaction is scarce. Through his main protagonist, Guy Montag, Bradbury brings attention to the dangers of a controlled society, and the problems that can arise from censorship. As a fireman, it is Guy's job to destroy books, and start fires rather than put them out. After meeting a series of unusual characters, a spark is ignited in Montag and he develops a desire for knowledge and a want to protect the books. Bradbury's novel teaches its readers how too much censorship and control can lead to further damage and the repetition of history’s mistakes through the use of symbolism, imagery, and motif.

Ever since the beginning of time humans have made interpretations of how the world will appear and function in the future. Sometimes these interpretations can be correct, but can also be very incorrect at the same time. The period of time in Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury is similar to today's society regarding the lack of social skills, and the growing addiction to technology, although some may say that technology is different today because it is an efficient way to access a broad amount of information. The first similarity the novel shares with the modern era is the regard to the lack of social skills society has developed over time.

Ray Bradbury, the author of Fahrenheit 451, presents a society in which humans suffer from depression, fear, and loss of empathy which are the result of censorship of free thought and knowledge. Humans suffer from loss of empathy due to their lack of human interaction. People live in fear of the government as the dystopian society deprives the people of knowledge. Depression is evidenced by suicidal tendencies caused by hollow lives. Bradbury uses the loss of empathy in order to demonstrate the effects that censorship of free thought and knowledge have upon the individual and society.

Neil Gaiman once wrote, “some books exist between covers that are perfectly people-shaped” (Gaiman xvi). The idea that books can be defined as the sharing of thoughts and information between people reveals a deeper meaning in Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. In Fahrenheit 451, the protagonist faces a society in which books are censored and, thus, burned. This, according to his definition, means that if books become banned, certain connections between people will, too, be destroyed. Ray Bradbury reveals the theme (the importance of books) through the protagonist’s dynamic character, which comes as a result from his conflicts with society.

In society, some people have conflicts with things and people around them. In Fahrenheit 451, the main character, Montag, has to burn books for a living. Montag’s life began to change when he has a decision to steal, hide, and read the books, or turn the books in and act like everyone else. Ray Bradbury shows Montag’s conflict with his wife, a friend, and technology in Fahrenheit 451. Bradbury uses Mildred, Montag’s wife, to show how everyone there is like robots.

The novel revolves around the main character, Guy Montag, referred to as Montag throughout the novel. Montag is a firemen, which means that in his society he starts fires rather than puting them out. A ban was put on books by society the people because they were seen to create a form of inequality, and contained controversial content. This was replaced by modernized technologies such as wall televisions.

Alienation is an experience of being isolated from a group or a society. It is something that affects people everyday at school, work or any social events. The theme of alienation is showed in The Lego Movie when the character tries very hard to meet society’s standards. In the novel Fahrenheit 451 alienation is showed when no one listens or pays attention to the protagonist. The Lego Movie and Fahrenheit 451 does a good job demonstrating the theme of alienation with the usage of character emotions, feelings and society’s standards and labels throughout the movie and the novel.

While Mildred’s characterization is an exaggeration, with today’s technologies she has become more relevant, relatable, and tragic. It is remarkable how much prescience Bradbury demonstrated in writing Fahrenheit 451. The Seashells Mildred uses resemble modern day earphones, and how she tunes out the world in favour of “an electronic ocean of sound” (19) predicted how people today would do the same while listening to music or podcasts on their mobile devices. Her TV walls are much like the numerous digital screens that permeate all parts of our lives and hold our attention. Or, the TV parlour and the scripted parts Mildred plays in the shows can be seen as an early concept for virtual reality video games.

He creates the point in “An Overview of Fahrenheit 451” by highlighting how technology is uncontrollably taking over the world, and compares it to how Mildred is devoted to technology saying, “immerses herself in the media provided for her to consume. Whenever she is not at the TV, she plugs in her earphones, always soaking up the artificial stimulus and messages someone else feeds to her,” Not only is technology taking over the world, but it is also taking over people. Technology brainwashed Mildred and the lack of social skills she contains with others is completely appropriate in her society.
