Is technology changing our brains for the better or for the worse? The human brain is a biological masterpiece and is the most advanced organ on the face of the planet. In Richard Restak’s essay “Attention Deficit: The Brain Syndrome of Our Era,” he speaks about how the advancements in technology in this modern era have affected the brain’s habits and functions. Multitasking is requiring the brain to change how it functions, its organizations, and efficiency throughout day-to-day tasks and is also enabling people to do things otherwise not possible. Within the past two decades, the amount of time we spend on using technology has increased by a large amount.

James Watson once said, “The brain is the most complex thing we have yet discovered in our universe”. It is responsible for every single movement in our body; from thinking, learning, breathing, creating memories and more. But the brain is not always perfect. We all have occasional “brain farts” or misperceptions of the world around us. Sometimes we believe that we have experienced vivid moments that we have never actually been through.

Although there may not be a direct answer to how the human brain evolved, there exists theories and suggestions, such as Gavin de Beer’s suggestion on evolution, that could be explanations as to how this came to be. In Edward Abbey writings he talks his descriptive encounters with nature in the deserts mostly about the snakes that he is watching. Abbey has a love for the deserts and this is why he writes about “The Serpents of Paradise”. In this story he used a lot of detail to make it feel like you know what is constantly going on, it almost felt like I was their and could imagine in my mind every moment I read. The way Abbey writes only makes me want to just keep reading. Abbey uses his senses to describe what he is seeing like the greasy wings of the ravens and what they sound like pretending to talk to him.

There is an important theme in the story Flowers for Algernon By Daniel Keyes. It is a fiction novel about a thirty year old man who has been battling to overcome an intellectual deficit all of his life and has an opportunity to become more intelligent than he ever had imagined through an experimental operation. He takes the opportunity and in a few weeks he becomes a genius for a short time before his itelligence receded as fast as it increased. The author includes many important themes throughout the passage. Daniel Keyes develops the theme that intelligence doesn’t affect who you truly are through Charlie’s experiences both before and after the operation.

Although there is evidence to men’s and women’s brains being wired differently, there is still work that needs to be done to further understand why the brains take on different structures according to sex, why we are so effected by hormones, and why social expectations and gender stereotypes play such a big role in our lives. The physical or biological structure of men’s and women’s brains hold differences which helps support the theory that men’s and women’s brains are somewhat ‘wired’ differently.
