Behind Alpha Phi
Among all of the discourses at Purdue University, Alpha Phi is one within itself. There are 18 sororities here at Purdue, and Alpha Phi is the discourse that I am in. Alpha Phi was founded in 1872 and continues to honor the sisterhood that was formed back then. There are ten founders who founded Alpha Phi at Syracuse University. Alpha Phi has a mission statement, and that is "Alpha Phi is a sisterhood of outstanding women supporting one another in lifelong achievement." According to Swales, "'discourse community' testifies to the increasingly common assumption that discourse operates within conventions defined by communities, be they academic disciplines or social groups," Alpha Phi sisters are able to support each other

Some of the items she mentioned were our initiation. She said that initiation is the most important event and they use a specific text to read off during the ceremony. Every sorority is different, and it is kept kind of a secret within our discourse community of Alpha Phi. I have not been initiated yet, so I don't really know what to expect and that is kind of special because they like to keep it within the sorority and only the girls who are Alpha Phi's know what it is about. In Swale's that relates to the discourse community utilizing and hence possessing one or more genres in the communicative furtherance of its aim. Swales' stated that, "One of the purposes of this criterion is to question discourse community status for new or newly-emergent groupings" (Swales). I believe that this relates to Alpha Phi, because the older girls who are already initiated do question if we are fit to be their sisters and they keep everything kind of a secret until initiation because we are so new and they want to see who we are as a person and what we will do to pass on our legacy after we …show more content…
It is a really complicated process and she explained that, "It depends on the Panhellenic which is the community that runs all of the sororities on campus. They determine campus totals, so when we recruit all of our new members we can only recruit a certain amount and that is based on how many people go through recruitment" (Vanyo). I thought that was really interesting because Swales' also stated in his one of his six characteristics that a discourse community has a threshold level of members with a suitable degree of relevant content and discoursal expertise. So basically they choose new members who would fit the house best, and it's really cool to know that they wanted me as much as I wanted to join their sorority. Swales' also stated that "survival of the community depends on a reasonable ratio between novices and experts"
While other sororities make up its own community, the Tri Delta community consists of over 130 collegiate chapters and 250 alumnae chapters all in which separate into 5 regions of the country. Overall, Tri Delta includes 16,000 collegiate members and 200,000 alumnae members. Tri Delta has been around since 1888, and has been on campus for 103 years this spring. This helps display that Delta Delta Delta is very selective in the choice of women that have represent the chapter, making the Tri Delta community only as strong, proud, successful, and sustainable as the women who make up this
On Monday November 27, individuals gathered together to attend the Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) induction ceremony. AKD is the International Sociology National Honor Society where members have shown excellence in the field of Sociology. In this ceremony, four students from the University of Tampa were inducted and congratulated on their hard work. To influence attendees who were not yet inducted into AKD and to inspire those who were just inducted, a professor at UT, Brittany Harder, gave a speech that lasted for approximately 45 minutes. She started out speaking about how she first got involved with Sociology.
The purpose of this paper is to review and analyze student cultures in the book Pledged: The Secret Life of Sororities, by Alexandra Robbins. The book provides a glimpse of the historically white national sorority system and investigates their secret group behavior. In the United States and Canada, approximately 800 institutions host social Greek Life on their campuses (Long, 2012). These chapters within the Greek Life system promote the ideals of scholarship, leadership, service, and friendship. However, in the Robbins’ book and narrative of a sorority illustrates sorority life and negative realities of that system, such as rush, bid, racism, pledging, initiation, Greek Week, breaks-up and sexual assaults.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. offers an opportunity like no
My intention is not to join this organization to step or because I like to party but, because I believe whole-heartedly in the values of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., scholarship, service, sisterhood and finer womanhood. I believe that through Zeta Phi Beta Inc. I will be able to fine tune my leadership skills, make lifelong friendships and help people on my journey as others did for me. It is my hope that this lifestyle will change my life for the better.
“The chief significance of Alpha Phi Alpha lies in its purpose to stimulate, develop, and cement an intelligent, trained leadership in the unending fight for freedom, equality, and fraternity. Our task is endless.” Jewel Henry Arthur Callis. Since its founding Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity has remained loyal to its ideal of providing advocacy for its community.
At Western Michigan University, there are many micro-cultures. One particular micro-culture I want to belong to is a sorority by the name of Delta Sigma Theta, incorporated. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 13, 1913, 103 years ago, by 22 collegiate women at Howard University to promote academic excellence and provide assistance to those in need. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is the largest African-American Greek-lettered organization.
To the women of the grad chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated: The purpose of this letter is to inform you of my interest in becoming a member of the grad chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated. My desire to inspire young men and women and make a significant impact on their lives is just one of many reasons I aspire to join your great sorority. While growing up at a young age my mom worked out of my sibling lives. I did not have many positive female role models I could look to for guidance in different situations.
I understand that not all brotherhoods are especially positive and have approbatory aims. For instance being part of a gang may mean you have a support system and are part of a brotherhood, but it does not mean you are bettering yourself. One other main reason why I have a desire to become a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity is because I want to have positive impact on the community around me, whether it be Temple University’s community or the general Philadelphia area. It would bring me great joy to be a part of an Alpha Phi Alpha project that would include reaching out to the youth of Philadelphia.
I genuinely care about my sorority. I care about our reputation, as well as the safety and well-being of my sisters. Going through rush as a sophomore gave me a unique perspective about joining a sorority. I wasn’t there solely to make friends or go to socials and date nights. I was there to take advantage of everything a sorority had to provide for me at UGA.
Explain your interest in joining Phi Delta Epsilon-MA Alpha Chapter. * I want to join Phi Delta Epsilon because it would provide me the chance to build lifelong connections and gain networking opportunities. Most importantly, I see myself forming a bond with other members, studying and sharing memories of what it’s like to be a premedical student at UMass Boston. The ability to connect, strive for success and learning from others with the same goal to attend medical school is what I’m truly seeking as a hopeful applicant of PhiDE. Joining the fraternity is the beginning phase of my strenuous road to become a successful physician.
Getting members to communicate what they think about and letting them know what the reality is can help members to rethink. Having group talks like these within each chapter can help decrease misconceptions. You know what you go through. Majority of the fraternities and sororities know what are some of the issues that are put against them.
