We have all at least once received a notification called an AMBER alert regarding a child who has been abducted or is missing around our area. For as long as I can remember AMBER alerts have always been around. But how did this system come about? According to the U.S. Department of Justice the AMBER alert system began in 1996. When Dallas-Fort Worth broad casters teamed with local police to develop an early warning system to find abducted children. The definition of AMBER alert is “an emergency response system that disseminates information about a missing person (usually a child) by media broadcasting or electronic roadway signs.”

The security guard notified the cops about what he had found. After her body was transported to the County Medical Examiner’s Office who later ruled Amber’s death a homicide. The cause of death was “cut wounds to the throat.”
There was storm that occurred that same evening that caused the creek to rise rapidly causing Amber’s body to move as well. This effected any evidence that was left on Amber’s body that could have been helpful in discovering the person responsible for her abduction and murder. The evidence left on her body was faded and was very hard to trace back to any suspects. The police did everything they could possibly do during that time to find the perpetrator.
Twenty-two years have passed since Amber was killed and there is still and ongoing investigation going on today regarding her case. It has been said that the officers are no closer to finding Amber’s killer than they were in 1996 because there isn’t much evidence to go off on. Amber’s family members say that they are glad so many children have been rescued because of this alert yet they wish a system similar to this existed back when Amber was abducted. The incident immediately became a priority as law enforcement authorities had set up search and rescue teams to locate the child.

8 Days Reception, Movie and, Panel Notes The Reception Prior to the movie a there was a reception hosted by Dignity Health. They served snacks and drinks and allowed people to talk before finding seats. There were pamphlets available and some information in the lobby offered as well.
The Amber Alert system was established in the United States in 1996. After a child has been abducted and the authorities have been notified, area police will determine if the circumstances meet the Amber Alert’s criteria.

As I began doing my research on the Jaycee Dugard case I was immediately pulled in because I cannot imagine what it would be like to live in captivity for almost two decades. On her way to school in 1991 this innocent little girl was kidnapped by monsters and robbed of her childhood. She found the strength within her soul to survive. During her time as a prisoner she was repeatedly raped by Phillip Garrido and his wife did nothing to stop it. Jaycee eventually gave birth to two children who were fathered by this captor.
On August 7, 2015 a young women by the name of Heather Maples was found dead at The Cove Apartments, where she lived at. MPD Detective James Abbott discovered her body lying on her stomach, with signs of “blunt force trauma” to her head, and also marks on her neck which indicates strangulation. Her phone was discovered underneath her, so investigators went through in hopes of finding more evidence. She was last seen alive at a bar called Gentleman Jim’s Bar with a couple of male friends that night.

The detectives, interviewed on “THS Investigates: Serial Killers on the loose”, stated the victims were either hitchhiking or in an isolated location late at night, such as a rest stop. The youngest victim was 17 years old and the oldest victim was 37 years old. The cause of death for the victims was stabbing; each one had at least 20 stab wounds. The killer’s signature on each victim included a cut to the throat. The detectives stated the cut to the throat was intended to disable the victim.
