3a. The American Revolution affected everyone in American society in a variety of ways in men, women, Patriots, Indians, loyalists, and slaves because of the series of events that had taken place. The events included the Seven Years’ War, which ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1763, the Sugar act of 1764, the stamp act of 1765. The sugar act of 1764 was the first in a series of acts that attempt to execute more strict way of rules of trade within the British Empire. The Tamp act of 1765 imposed direct taxes on many items including newspapers and legal documents. The British viewed the Proclamation of 1763 as an attempt to restrict economic growth and the Stamp act as a way to impose direct taxation on the colonies. The responses of many were …show more content…
The Revolution seemed to conflict more forward than backwards because of events that occurred such as the Seven Years’ War that lasted from 1754-1763, which concluded along with the Treaty of Paris. This war was won by the British as they were able to acquire vast territories in Canada to Britain (Cobbs, 96). The British received Quebec and the Ohio Valley as a result of the vast territories (http://www.ushistory.org/us/8d.asp). But it also brought more conflicts going forward as the British as their national debt had doubled in the duration of the war, and British officials had regained some of their losses through reorganization within the British Empire. Correspondingly, they passed a series that strived to regulate settlement and trade and to enlarge the tax burden of the colonists (Cobbs, 96). The Royal Proclamation or the Treaty of Paris of 1763, marked the conclusion of the French and Indian War, awarded Britain a great deal of high-end North American territory (http://www.ushistory.org/us/9a.asp). The Stamp Act also seemed to conflict more forwards because it really left a lot of unimpressed individuals to protest and some even spoke out at political assemblies (Cobbs, 96). Britain was exercising direct influence over colonial life. In addition to limit westward movement, the parent country was actually enforcing its trade laws (http://www.ushistory.org/us/9b.asp). The Stamp Act of 1765 was not the first attempt to tax the American colonies. Parliament had passed the Sugar Act and Currency Act the foregoing year. Because tax was collected at ports though, it was simply evaded. Indirect taxes such as these were also much less clear to the consumer
Also, two major acts were put in place, called the Sugar Act and the Stamp Act. The Stamp act actually cut the taxes from the Molasses act, in half, to three cents per gallon. It also differed from the Molasses act, because it included new safeguards to ensure that it would actually be enforced. For merchants, this really meant a change from no tax to a three cents tax. The Stamp act, was a direct British tax on a wide variety of printed materials
Separately, these acts did not cause the American revolution but together the acts created tension between the American colonists and England. The Stamp act started to build the tension between the colonists and England because it was the first tax directly imposed onto the colonists. They saw this as unfair because during the French and Indian war the colonist were ignored and then suddenly they were expected to pay off Britain’s war debt. The Stamp Act led to the Declaratory Act which led to many other laws given by King George the III and Parliament because of the backlash received from the colonists. The Boston tea party was an effect of the Tea Act enacted on the American colonists.
There were many events leading up to the revolutionary war but the Stamp Act and Sugar Act had its impact. These two acts are a part of what got the conflict started between Great Britain and America; The Sugar Act, was a law that imposed taxes on certain imports and the Stamp Act, is a law that levied new excise taxes. The colonist posed such strong opposition against the taxes the British government were implemented that it was
Following a victory of the Seven Years’ War the British made policy changes on how to handle the American colonies. These policies were to enforce trade regulations, as well as collecting money to help pay for the expenses of the British Empire. These policies would be The Sugar Act, which helped making the collection of taxes on molasses more efficient. Then in 1765, The Stamp Act was created. The Stamp Act would spread the English Tax on newspapers, legal documents and other prints.
The War of the Revolution What were the political objectives of the British in the Revolutionary war? After the French and Indian war, the British government tried to reduce the debt that occurred during the war. The British tried to collect more taxes throughout the colonies and gain more power over the colonies. The British started out by passing the Stamp Act which was a way for the British to get more money by taxing all paper goods that is printed. The Americans repealed this act and stopped buying British goods.
The way the colonists reacted to the Stamp Acts is that they boycotted British goods. King George III reacted by repealing the Stamp Act and put the Declaratory Act in to that same day. The Declaratory Act is a law that stated that Parliament had the right to tax the colonies
Did the French and Indian War Cause the Revolution? All wars cause effects on the world which must be accepted, whether they are virtuous or wicked. Some effects can change the social world and the economy. The United States, while under British rule, clashed with the French while the rest of the world prospered.
This revolution began around the time to which the British and French colonized in America. Around this time,” George III became king of Great Britain,” and had a very prosperous population in North America. In 1651 there was a trade law passed known as the Navigation Act which, “prevented colonists from selling their most valuable products to any country except Britain.” This plus the colonist having to, “pay high taxes on imported French and Dutch goods,” caused an uproar in the colonies for the Americans. A battle begins, with a war starting between the English and French.
The colonists had become accustomed to a limited degree of British regulation of trade. The Navigation Acts of 1660, for example, stipulated that no goods or commodities could be imported into or exported out of any British colony except in British ships. Later legislation stipulated that rice, molasses, beaver skins, furs, and naval stores could be shipped only to England. Duties were also imposed on the shipment of certain articles, such as rum and spirits. However, the Stamp Act was the first direct tax, a tax on domestically produced and consumed items, that Parliament ever levied upon the
When looking at the social and political changes that took place during the early American colonies you can see a steady progression towards ideologies that would lead to the Revolution. When you have different levels of government being put in place by the states depending upon their needs, where rural areas had different court systems than more urban areas, you see a level of independence for governance that the colonists began to see the benefit of having, separate from the rule of the Crown. To counter this increase in independence. the Crown implemented ever changing political positions that could be assigned to those who were loyal to the Crown and the social hierarchy that was prevalent in Britain at the time. These actions of corruption
After the end of the Seven Years’ War, the French no longer held a threat in America causing the colonies to no longer need to rely on Britain. However, Britain saw this as a time to get repayment for the protection it had already provided during that conflict. The new taxes became overbearing and the breaking point for many American Colonist; war broke out.
Arguably, these taxes were only placed by Britain to “milk” the colonies for profit. Ben Franklin responded to the Stamp Act, writing a letter to John Hughs to discuss efforts to get it repealed (Document G). . In a way, the series of taxes applied by Parliament would spark a fire within the colonists and begin the American Revolution, where Americans finally say enough is enough. The time had come for political and ideological change, where the colonies would break from their motherland, Great Britain. In conclusion, the French Indian War would kick off a series of political, economic, and ideological events that changed the relationship between Britain and its colonies forever.
The American Revolution occurred between 1765 and 1783. Colonists in the thirteen american colonies had disagreements with the british monarchy and aristocracy. The American Revolution War was also known as the U.S. War of Independence. During these years Americans went through a series of battles and new laws and rules were set. During the American Revolution there were a lot of long term and short term causes, including economic factors, english political legacy, and foreign policy.
After the French and Indian War in 1763, economic elements forced Britain to feel the need to raise funds to pay off the war debt. The policies that were enforced by the new prime minister resulted in America's fight for independence. Some of the taxed imposed upon the colonies included the Sugar Act, the Stamp Act and the Tea Act. All three of these acts forced the Americans to pay a tax on everyday goods. Americans viewed the new tax on sugar and other imports as a burden and violation of their rights, for the British, the taxes were a modest imposition necessary to pay for the cost of eliminating the French from North America and administering the colonies (Keene, 101-102).
American Culture Pre and Post Revolution The American Revolution was a war that began in 1775. It was between American colonies and Great Britain. The American colonies wanted to escape the harsh parliament slowly taking away their rights.
