Joseph Campbell is an American writer and mythologist. According to his teachings, all mythologies adopt the same pattern, recognized as the heroic Monomyth. The monomyth can also be defined as a hero's journey. Tons of heroic characters reflect the monomyth, regardless of the era, culture and literature it was made in. The epic poem Beowlf executes the theory of a hero's journey thoroghly.

In order to examine the roles of archetypal hero and outcast in Beowulf, one must think actively while reading. Throughout Beowulf, multiple characters are introduced to the readers, and the archetypal character traits begin to blend. When a reader is introduced to Beowulf, the individual will believe Beowulf is the hero. The reader interprets Beowulf as the hero due to his rescue of the Danes from the horror the town has experienced for twelve years prior to Grendel’s attacks. Nevertheless, Beowulf personally takes on multiple character traits that are usually unnoticed by a variety of readers.

Each of these major parts have smaller steps within them that are parts of a task the hero takes on. Now Beowulf is of course the hero of the story. He goes out and volunteers to fight Grendel for the Danes who had been dealing with him for twelve years nonstop. Beowulf also goes and defeats Grendel’s mother when she awakens from her den and tries to avenge her son.

These heroes of tragedy have the ability to determine their own fortune due to the amount of admired characteristics they possess. However, the ideals of an epic hero are constantly fluctuating due to the ever changing ideals of society. Although the characteristics of an epic hero are under constant modification, Beowulf is still an effective modern-day hero due to his acts of courage, compassion, and dedication in relation to his people. It takes one courageous person to make a change for the better and this person is Beowulf. He comes to protect the land of Hrothgar of which is being attacked. A strong brave warrior takes his chances to defeat the great antagonist, Grendel. Not only does he conquer Grendel, but his mother as well.
