Many people think that most American schools are satisfactory. That is far from what is actually happening. The harsh reality is that schools that are unsatisfactory do exist. In Jonathan Kozol’s “Fremont High School”, he points out the flaws of a high school located somewhere in Los Angeles. This helps shine light on differences in the quality of education in various areas of the country. Kozol’s “Fremont High School” shows that the school system is corrupt and the school is lacking in funds to help students get the proper education for college and success in their future.

The text appeals to the readers for both of the examples through emotion (pathos) by describing the conditions that the students learn in and it shows how the administration doesn’t care about the well-being of the students. Mireya discusses Fremont’s academic and sanitary problems and in the court papers it states, “Some of the classrooms ’do not have air-conditioning,’ so that students ‘become red-faced and unable to concentrate’ during ‘the extreme heat of summer.’ The rats observed by children in their elementary schools proliferate at Fremont High as well. ‘Rats in eleven . . . classrooms,’ maintenance records of the school report “(Kozol 708). Unsatisfactory schools do not maintain suitable conditions for students to learn and they are not treated as well as students from other schools. An example of this is in Kozol’s Fremont High School when it states that, “Long lines of girls are ‘waiting to use the bathrooms,’ which are generally ‘unclean’ and ‘lack basic supplies,’ including toilet paper” (Kozol 707).
Student who have the desire to go to college hit dead ends in the school. One of the most impactful parts of the passage was when Kozol quoted Fortino saying, “You’re ghetto, so we send you to the factory” (Kozol 710).
