In Mary E. Wilkins Freeman’s short story “The New England Nun” The protagonist Louisa is faced with being pressured by society to play the role of a women. Women in this particular century had a certain role in life . They were either wives or mothers who cooked and cleaned. Louisa conformed to this role even without the pressures of a family. Although many women at the time we're starting to reject house work as a way to free themselves . Freeman uses Louisa to show a women who went against society's norms and was content with her own solitude.

Their speech didn't exactly match as well as him knocking over her things as he made his way out. “Going out, he stumbled over a rug, and trying to recover himself, hit Louisa's work-basket on the table, and knocked it on the floor.He looked at Louisa, then at the rolling spools; he ducked himself awkwardly toward them, but she stopped him. In colonial North America, the lives of women were distinct and described in the roles exhibited in their inscriptions. In this book, Good Wives the roles of woman were neither simple nor insignificant. Ulrich proves in her writing that these women did it all. The life women in the American colonies was treacherous, yet rewarding. There was so much death and sickness around at the beginning of the new world it is a wonder anyone survived. Had it not been for the nurturing and healing offered by women, this country may have never gotten itself off the ground. The Unnamed Woman Up until the 1900’s woman had few rights, thus they relied heavily on men. Women could not vote, they could not own their own property, and very few worked. Women’s jobs were solely to care for children and take care of the home. Women during this time, typically accepted their roles in society and the economy ( “Progressive Era to New Era, 1900-1909”).
In the pastoralization of housework, woman found a new dynamic in the family system by becoming influencers. Boydston writes, “‘...in which wives were described as deities “who presides over the sanctities of domestic life, and administer its sacred rights….”” With the romanization of housework woman found themselves placed on a higher pedestal, and with this newly found power, women were able to influence their husband’s decisions. Women during the Antebellum period were described as “holy and pious” and they were seen as the more religious being out of the two sexes, so it was customary for women to use their power to help the family stay on the right path. Mrs. A. J. Graves supported this idea and directly connects women’s role of taking care of the home to a station which God and nature assigned her.

Welter states, “The best refuge for such a delicate creature was the warmth and safety of her home.
