Analysis Of Night By Elie Wiesel

In Elie Wiesel’s memoir Night he compares two experiences of hanging through which the end result had been vastly different. The first hanging that he saw was of solely just a man and they were given soup afterwards; they were very hungry, their stomachs empty so once given that soup it had tasted as if he just won the lottery. Yes it was tragic but they had by then probably witnessed a lot of the hardships brought upon them by the Nazis’, so for them they only wanted soup. The second time was different, it was dark, inhumane, terribly horrifying. This time it was of three, two of which were adults; but that last one... that last one was a boy.

Being the last sentence of the book, and out of all the passages I highlighted this one stood out to me and described Wiesel’s experience in just a few simple sentence. He looked at himself for the first time in many years, and did not recognize himself he saw a different person. This showed me that the concentration camps changed him he was a different person inside and out. The events that occurred to him had scared him so much that the man he saw in the mirror wasn’t him, but one who had been drained of life that looked lifeless from the events occurred in the concentration camps. He was weak and this whole passage embodies his weakness and the whole point of the concentration camps.

NIght Elie Wiesel was a young boy when he experienced the holocaust, he lost almost everything he had built up. From family, to friends, to his faith in god itself. But as everything ended and he grew up he wrote a book. This book is Called “Night” and in this book he talks about everything he went through in the death camp Auschwitz, and how he survived the pure inhumanity. Elie Wiesel says some things about how it changed his views, He began to doubt his faith.

Both main characters have a relationship with their parents, the main characters are in the works with having a relationship with God and finally, both of the protagonists have recurring images of death and dying. In Night by Elie Wiesel, the townspeople of Sighet shrug off the events foreshadowing their deportation. They first ignore Moishe the Beadle’s attempts to warn them about the situation. As a foreign Jew, he already experienced the expulsion from the town. Nobody believes Moishe because of the implications of his words being true. He mentions death, a taboo subject that humanity avoids at all costs, which I suspect is a form of survival instinct.

The book night is a non fiction account of a Jewish 15 year old teenager who tells the story of his experience as a young boy, with his family taken from their home in Hungary during the holocaust in 1940s. Victims of the Holocaust demonstrated finding light in the darkness by practicing their religion, comforting and consoling one another, and masking the truth. Jews practiced their religion during the Holocaust instead of giving it up. In the text, Prisoner B-3087, the author states, “But suddenly I thought standing in a minyan for somebody’s Bar Mitzvah as the most important thing in the world,” (Gratz 269). This is an example of how Jews practiced their religion because he is continuing to practice his religion and help others practice theirs.

Throughout the memoir, Elie’s faith towards God is tested, and by the end of the book his faith is reduced to almost nothing. In the beginning Elie follows all of the traditions of being a Jew but slowly loses his faith when he gets to the camp. Toward the middle Elie’s faith is really tested and is wearing down because he is fed up with God. At the end Elie wonders why he even believed in God and his faith is basically nonexistent.

Throughout the book Night, Elie has different thoughts and beliefs on his religion and God. With his beliefs the author gives a tone from the way he thinks and believes his religion. The author communicates many different tones throughout chapter 5. One tone from the beginning of the chapter was anger.

Elie's faith is tested many times in night. It is a struggle throughout the entire book and eventually it is lost and once it is lost you can never get it back. The first-time Elie's faith is tested is when he watches the baby's get burned alive in the dark of night when they first enter Birkenau. It is tested that same night as well when he thinks he is going to be burned alive but he still blesses god right before he thinks he's going to die. The next time his faith is when Elie’s faith was tested was on new year’s.

Imagine believing so strongly in something and then being let down, or thinking that you were wrong to believe. During the day I studied the Talmud, and at night I ran to the synagogue to weep of the destruction of the Temple,” (Wiesel, 14).
