A pressing, socio-economic issue seen prevelantly in today’s society is racism. The term has been used for a long time, but has still found its way to stay in the current vocabulary of people in the twenty-first century. The timeless occurence of racism in society has been documented in a piece of literature that enables the horrors of this foulness to forever be known. “Brownies” by ZZ Packer made its way to the shelves in 2003 and has left many in awe of the in-depth perception of how people of the black race were mistreated. The story starts off when a group of black girls were mistreated by a group of white girls at a retreat known as Camp Crescendo (Packer 1). Years may have passed since this was written, but the hostile attitudes towards people of a different race still exist.
Think about what it must feel like to have someone of a different race treating you as an invaluable human being. The fact of the matter is that people do feel this way, a lot of people. To get to the core of why racism still exist in America, we can refer back to “Brownies” and where racism is found frequently. First, we can take a look at schools. School is a place where students should feel accepted and embraced. This story exemplifies just the opposite. It starts off at a summer camp that is at a high school band field. The girls attending this camp are racially separated in their own “troops”. One Brownie group consists of black girls that attend Woodrow Wilson Elementary School. This is our first look at the seperation of races. At this elementary school, there is a large presence of black children. The students refer to Dennis, a particular young child, as “the only white kid in our school,” (Packer 4). One remaining question is what does tomorrow hold? ZZ Packer used this book as a way to bring light to such a dark topic. While America is not where we used to be, we still have a lot of progress to make in the near future. “Revisiting the Rhetoric of Racism” by Mark Lawrence McPhail suggests that African-Americans have longed for a sense of identity that has long been denied by people of the white race. McPhail said that scholars have been working to understand racial rhetoric by examining the “social construction of identity and difference,” (McPhail 43). We can also examine the work of M.J. Maher in “Racism and Cultural Diversity : Cultivating Racial Harmony Through Counselling, Group Analysis, and Psychotherapy” as he goes through the steps of healing and prosperity of races. He describes how he used his knowledge gained from Manchester Metropolitan University to apply them in his everyday life as a counselor who specifically targeted people who were in need of finding themselves after being broken down due to racism. By doing so, he was also able to find his “sense of belonging” and has been using his skills to boost the confidence of those in need of some (Maher 324). 2 Questions of “Brownies” 1. In the short story, “Brownies,” I would describe the narrator, whose name is Laurel, as a shy and timid girl, questioning the way people act. Most of the girls in her group do not take a liking to her, for she says, “[They] already decided their course of action, me being the only impediment” (Packer 847). Moreover, the narrator is very smart because she is skeptical, for she is the only one who questions the girls if they, in fact, heard troop 909 call one of the girls a nigger.
In this short story the Brownie troops at the summer camp appear either all black or all white, no mixed troop is present. This displays the constant segregation occurring and the influence it has on young children who are vulnerable to a racially segregated environment causing them to portray themselves a certain way. The black girls have little knowledge of people different than them, “When you lived in the south suburbs of Atlanta, it was easy to forget about whites. Whites were like those baby pigeons: real and existing, but rarely seen or thought about” (pg. 5), because of these girls have little contact with one another and the black girls are extremely conscious of the differences they posses. The feeling of differences comes from the world around them, what they hear and see affect their opinions tremendously.
In the memoir Warriors Don’t Cry, Melba Pattillo Beals details her and the rest of the Little Rock Nines’ struggles against segregationists in their attempt to integrate Central High School. They fought through constant harassment and death threats on their journey to become the first black students to successfully complete a school year at a previously all-white school. The book highlights the effects of racial segregation while emphasizing the importance of perseverance and resilience when facing adversity. One of the major themes of the book is the effects of racial discrimination and segregation. Everything from bathrooms to water fountains were separate and black people were treated as second-class citizens.
Melba Beals memoir presents heroic detailed components about the integration of Central High. In chapter 4, of Warriors Don't Cry, Melba Beals gives a detailed description of her first day integrating Little Rock Central High School. While driving to school Melba had heard about the large crowd of segregationist that had gathered outside Central High School. When Melba arrived at school she describes how she saw “In the distance, large crowds of white people were lining the curd directly across from the front of Central High…stretched for a distance of two blocks along the entire span of the school"(Beals 37). Melba's use of details allows the reader to visualize an angry mob of white people trying to attack the African American students.
Showing an act of astounding courage, Melba still went to an all white school despite the traumatic experience. Lots of very realistic dialogues stood out to me but when the segregationists crowded central high on the first day and were screaming “Niggers, go home! Niggers, go back where you belong!” (Pg.35) I felt a pang in my heart as someone of my own family was hearing those cruel words.
Where do we draw the lines between adoration and mockery, influence and appropriation, and individuality and stereotyping? Accordingly, the racial subject has always been a touchy topic to discuss, but with the lasting effects that the black minstrelsy has left in the society, we most definitely need to deal with the racial subject. Only this way can the American society move forward both as a nation and as a species, and through such efforts, only then can we ensure that such history can never repeat
Tyna L. Steptoe’s book, Houston Bound: Culture and Color in a Jim Crow City explores the significance of Wheatley High School, a public secondary school located in the heart of Fifth Ward, Houston, Texas, established in the 1930s to serve black and Creole students during the Jim Crow era. Despite being segregated, the students at Wheatley did not let this hold them down and instead made the best of the situation by getting heavily involved in their school. Wheatley High School gave their black and creole students tools for advancement and helped strengthen their cultural identity and in a historic period in which racial discrimination attempted to curtail their political and economic potential. In this Jim Crow era, the institutions of the city were divided by the racial categories of white and black, which would force everyone into one or the other category, even if they did not necessarily associate themselves with it. Accordingly, racially ambiguous people would either receive the benefits that accompanied the white label or the grim treatment that accompanied the black label.
During the 2000’s, many African Americans would experience many acts of racial profiling and unfair justification. Young children had to learn a specific was of living in order to survive. They called it “Racial Etiquette”, Within the article the author explains how a family called the Ritters addresses how black and white children in the Jim Crow South learned what she calls a “racial etiquette”. For the Ritterhouse, racial etiquette is more than a series of manners or customs. It refers to “a set of rules, a script, and part of a process, the power- relations process by which a viable relationship between dominant white and subordinate black—and therefore ‘race’ itself—was renegotiated on a day-to-day basis”(Berrey 2009)
This fictional short story had a powerful meaning because it focused on how racial stereotyping can cause a lot of problems even among young girls who were attending a Girl Scouts camp. “Brownies” also showed how stereotyping can actually be harmful and can sometimes lead to hurtful consequences for the person who is the victim of it and for the person is guilty of stereotyping someone. I decided to do my analysis of this short story using the historical context element because of the long history of problems between the Black and White races in this country according to our history books, including one terrible incident that just happened one week ago when nine innocent Black people were murdered in a church in Charleston South Carolina by a 21 year old White racist who was guilty of stereotyping and hating Black people. The killer accused Black men of raping White women and that Black people were taking over the whole country. These were stereotypes that he first thought about in his head that then led to his terrible actions.
In the book Warriors Don 't Cry, Melba and her friends integrate into Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Melba and her friends experiences troubles as she tries to survive integration. Beals reveals a lot of things that would gives hint to things that we see ahead. The book mainly focuses on the south, light has been shed on events in the north around the same time when the Little Rock Nine (Bars) integrated. This essay will make inferences that show how people in the southern schools will continue to be ruthless and slow acceptance for the nine and for the north schools how whites will except African-Americans more.
Beatings, name-calling and death threats were some of the things that happened throughout Melba Patillo Beals integration journey into Central High School in 1957 that she described in her book ‘Warriors Don’t Cry’. Normally when you think about high school, you think new friends, first boyfriends, sporting events and college, not having to display a warrior mentality. But for Melba, she was one of the “Little Rock Nine” chosen to integrate into a previously all white school in Arkansas during a time when racial tensions were at an all time high and hatred towards blacks fueled the world. In “Naughty by Nature”, Ann Ferguson covers the different perceptions that society has of colored boys. David Knight’s work “Don’t tell young black males that they are endangered” seeks to explain the differents outcomes of African-American youth that arise when society constantly oppresses them. The last article by Carla O’Connor, “The Culture of Black Femininity and School Success”, focuses on the image of African-American woman that is created as a result of them attempting to preserve in a system that opposes them.
Children go to school to gain knowledge, but life can give children the most important education. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Jem, and Scout are two growing children navigating life in the 1930’s in racist Alabama. They see racism throughout their town and have to navigate how they want to live their lives or follow their town. In their own school, they see racist people, and they often question what they hear, see, and learn.
Moreover, demonstrate consequences are taken to oppress racial and ethnic minorities to keep them in a subservient position. Overall, this film has provided me with a visual depiction of how stereotypes are a mental tool that enforces racial segregation and self-hate.
