Courageous Characters Communities have a very big impact on people’s lives, especially in science fiction stories. Many inspire courage for a character in times of need. Four pieces of text illustrate this perfectly: “The Last Dog,” by Katherine Patterson; “Harrison Bergeron,” by Kurt Vonnegut; The Monsters are Due on Maple Street by Rod Serling; and The Giver by Lois Lowry. Each community in these stories influenced the main character’s courage in a difficult situation. In the short story, “The Last Dog,” Brock’s community affected him greatly. After Brock found Brog, scientists wanted to clone him for experimental purposes. For instance, the author said, “‘Cloning-it’s the only thing to do. If she’s the last, we owe it to prosperity to …show more content…
A power failure threatened Maple Street, with a strange meteor seeming to be the cause of it. Under normal circumstances, this would be no need for courage. However, his community was very anxious and paranoid about the whole predicament, and was starting to point fingers as to who was to blame. Since Steve was eventually incriminated, too, for suspicious behavior, his community made him angry and defensive. That eventually led him having enough courage to stand up for himself. For example, Steve said, “‘And stop telling me who’s dangerous and who isn’t and who’s safe who’s a menace,” (Serling 678). This shows he was able to stand up for himself, without blaming anyone else, because he was under pressure from his community. Also, he understands everyone is different and urges the crowd no to crucify based upon that. Not to mention, he goes to great lengths to protect his community. For instance, Steve said, “‘Wait a minute! Wait a minute! Let’s not be a mob!’” (Serling 673). This quote shows that he was trying to keep the crowd peaceful, so there would be no fights between his neighbors. In conclusion, Steve showed courage because of the pressure from his community and his will to protect …show more content…
A newchild, Gabriel, was going to be released. For anyone else in this community, this would not be as devastating as it was for Jonas. However, his community affected him in two ways that made the ordeal quite worse for him. First, quite simply, Jonas actually knew what was going to happen to Gabe during the release, unlike most of his community – he would have been killed. For example, the author said, “He killed it! My father killed it!” (Lowry 150). This quote showed Jonas watching the recording and finally realizing what release really means. Second, Jonas understood emotions such as love, happiness, and a sense of family. For instance, Jonas said, “I liked the feeling of love,” (Lowry 126). Due to his understanding of love and family, he formed an emotional attachment with Gabriel, something that does not happen in this community, because of their lack of emotions. Those factors made Jonas have the courage to save Gabe. Overall, Jonas’ knowledge and wisdom from memories and the recording of the release helped him to find his own
“You’ve never felt anything. Not on the inside, you know that... Not for others, and neither do I. We can’t help it. Nothing - gets - in.”
The news leaves Jonas in shock because he didn’t comprehend how the community has the willpower to kill innocent humans. As one can see the community is very secretive to make sure the people from the community don’t find out what it means to be
Everyone has those gut feelings or human instincts that guides them through tough decisions and help decide whether those decisions are right or wrong. Even characters in stories and novels have gut instincts that help guide them on their journey. People 's instincts usually have its own way of letting people know if the correct choice is being chosen or to remind people the difference from right and wrong. Some people like to call these instincts, an inner voice or conscience. People are born with good morals and intentions.
The Impact of John Green on American Culture “What is the point of being alive if you don’t at least try to do something remarkable?” (John Green). Author John Green holds true to this quote in the way he lives his life through his many achievements. As a young child being bullied and not feeling like enough, he found a way to express his feelings through his writing. Green did not find himself until college after changing majors and spending time with ill kids in a children’s hospital.
Regardless of age, gender, and race, everyone encounters different problems in his or her daily life. Whether the problems are as simple as getting up in the morning or untangling the headphones, people need to find a solution to solve them. The only thing that matters is what solutions they will seek. In David Foster Wallace’s “Good People,” he narrates a story about two college students, Lane Dean, Jr. and Sheri Fisher, who face a dilemma of choosing between either abortion or keeping their baby. They are torn between these choices because they come from a religious family, in which abortion is unethical and immoral.

Jonas also found out what it means to starve. This was very hard for him, he now realized that all places are not like his community where everyone is all the same and had everything provided for them. If Jonas had had lots of innocence, he would not have been starving, he would of stayed in his community. This is shown in the following quote, “Jonas remembered, suddenly and grimly , the time in his childhood when he had been chastised for a misusing a word. The word had been “starving.”

“Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing – Benjamin Franklin.” When Benjamin Franklin created the fictional character, Silence Dogood, he achieved both of these things outlined in this quote. The Silence Dogood Letters were both something worth reading and worth writing about. They were a popular phenomenon when they were first written and they still prove to be an important part of our U.S. history to this day. Silence Dogood was first created so that Ben could get his writing in his brother’s newspaper, The New England Courant.
In the short story “The Last Dog” by Katherine Peterson, A person named Brock wanted to go outside of the dome. Everyone living in the dome is a clone. Brock saved a dog from being cloned and tested on. I learned that you shouldn’t always trust what other people say all of the time. You should trust your instincts sometimes.
Every piece of literature can be compared to others to determine which is better. But what if the two pieces being compared are the same story? Anton Chekhov, in the late 1800s, wrote the short story “The Lady with the Pet Dog” about a man who views women as an “inferior race” and constantly cheats on his wife until he finds a young lady he truly falls in love with. Joyce Carol Oates’ story, written almost 100 years later, also named “The Lady with the Pet Dog” is about a woman who cheats on her husband with a lover she truly falls in love with. Even with these two stories being very similar as much as having the same title, one can be determined as the better piece.
