The Ohio National Guard came to Kent State University because the students there were holding an anti-war rally(PUBLISHED).

On the evening of March 5th, 1770 on the cold streets of Boston, a group of British soldiers gunned down a crowd gathered in protest. What started as a group of young men harassing a guard would quickly escalate into what would later be referred to as the Boston Massacre as well as serve as fuel for the growing anger of the colonists towards Britain. This paper will analyze two accounts of this event. One is of a civilian observer by the name of William Wyatt whose account, while short, is to the point. The other is that of Captain Thomas Preston, the commanding officer of the soldiers involved who gives a much more dramatic description of the event.

Thomas Goodrich masterfully tells the story of the Lawrence Massacre with details that take the reader to chaotic streets of Lawrence, Kansas on August 21, 1863. This town of only 3,000 residents was attacked by four hundred pro-Confederate “raiders” from Missouri led by William Quantrill. The bloody massacre that ensued left over 150 citizens dead and 200 buildings destroyed. Goodrich’s account of the Lawrence Massacre epitomized how violent and barbaric guerilla fighting was in the Civil War. Goodrich used multiple primary sources such as newspapers and eye-witness testimony as well as contemporary studies done on the events at Lawrence to tell the complete story of the massacre.

One day a chilly, damp fog rolled into Boston in 1770. Two British guards were stationed on King Street. John and Hugh apprehensively watched the streets fearful of what might jump out of the fog. In his account, the British were ordered around by Captain Preston and were not in the usual formation for a battle. From other perspectives, like George Sanderlin and Andrew, they had heard the captain boom, “Fire! Be the consequences at will.”

I believe the jury did the right decision in the case of the boston Massacre, I think Captain Preston was innocent and did not order his men to fire, but individuals soldiers may be guilty of murder. The Boston Massacre started in March 5th 1770 in boston and 5 men and boys died. It started in front of a Government office with a crowd of american colonists who were propagandising the british soldiers they were in a riot fighting against the soldiers who were acting in malice. The incident started when the crowd was provoking the soldiers, they threw snowballs and clubs at the soldiers. One of the soldiers named Montgomery was hit on the head with ice and fell to the ground after he got up and fired into the crowd.

In America, we learn that British soldiers fired upon innocent civilians, although this may not have been the case. The definition of a massacre refers to an unnecessary and random killing of a large number of individuals.

In all, there were 4000 soldiers in Boston by the beginning of 1770. Tensions were running in the city with only 15,000 inhabitants. On March 5, crowds of apprentices, laborers, and merchants began to throw snowballs and rocks at the British soldiers. A single shot rang out at first, then several other soldiers shot as well When the dust settled, 5 people were dying or either dead. An African American merchant sailor who escaped from slavery 20 years prior also died, making him the first African American to die for the American dream.
