The author John Steinbeck best evokes empathy and compassion in an audience with his story The Harvest Gypsies more than other authors. The authors Kevin Starr and James Weldon Johnson have evoked empathy in the audience with their stories but were not as strong. The stories that will be compared to The Harvest Gypsies are titled Lift Every Voice and Sing by Kevin Starr and Endangered Dreams by James Weldon Johnson. Comparing these stories with John Steinbeck’s story will prove how much empathy there is in the story.

Overall, what I took away from the poem is that we as a country need to come together and try to change the system so everyone is able to feel safe in our country. Truly successful poets have the ability to convey their own thoughts and makes us think deeply about things in life without having to tells us to do so. In the poem “All Eyez On U”, Nikki Giovanni does just this. Through the use of stylistic elements such as diction,details, and imagery, Nikki Giovanni shows her dislike of the white race, blames, and shames the white race for supposedly killing Tupac, forcing crime, and framing the blacks. Giovanni uses diction to aid her political statement by over using words such as us,them and they referring to the blacks as us, and the whites as they.

In Giovanni’s second paragraph he says that “we know we did nothing to deserve it” and then he references children in “Africa dying of AIDS” and the Mexican child looking for fresh water” to use that as an example to provide logic to and to show the audience that even though no one truly deserves for a tragedy to happen to them no one stop because tragedies happen very frequently and all across the world and all that humans can do after a tragedy is to persevere and move on. Furthermore, these real world examples were incorporated in order to give relatable examples so that the audience would understand how other families in other countries when a tragedy like this happens to them. Both Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” and Michael Moore’s political documentary “Bowling for Columbine” exemplify this notion, utilising their own political perspectives to create unique and evocative interpretations of their time’s political situation. Miller presents “The Crucible” as an allegorical piece that is a commentary of the mass hysteria and paranoia that engulfed American society surrounding the McCarthy era. In “Bowling for Columbine” Moore creates a comedic, yet chilling documentary attempting to unveil the causes for the Columbine High School massacre and violence more generally in America. Both composers cleverly criticique the political circumstances of their time through a range of literary techniques and themes.

Jan Barry, who wrote the article, described many reasons why war was not a good idea. In the song, “We gotta get out of this place”, it talked about how war was a waste of time and that you’ll eventually die before your time.

“Because they never understand Black love is Black wealth” (Line 22), proving that although people judge about the welfare of black people, all that is needed is love and that is enough. She then ends the poem with “ I really hope no white person ever has the cause to write about me” (Line 21), which in her mind she thought you wouldn’t understand the culture and how you could be happy in that environment if you weren’t there. People usually imagine black families impoverished, upset, or angry, but with this poem she explains that she had a family that was nothing like that and her family’s love made her childhood great. Nikki Giovanni said a lot more than she wrote in this poem, by showing the flip side to what everybody thinks is a horrible lifestyle to live in. She explains that her parents had love for her, even though they had their own problems.

“Incident” by Natasha Tretheway brings to life the horrors African Americans faced during the time the Ku Klux Klan was rampant in the United States. Fear and secretiveness was an everyday part of African American lives. They were unable to live like white Americans were due to the racism they faced. This poem, however, symbolizes the idea that life continues through the fear of it crumbling. The narrator is still alive to tell his or her story; therefore, this is evidence that life continues.

The poem “A Story” by Li-Young Lee depicts the complex relationship between a boy and his father when the boy asks his father for a story and he can’t come up with one. When you’re a parent your main focus is to make your child happy and to meet all the expectations your child meets. When you come to realize a certain expectation can’t satisfy the person you love your reaction should automatically be to question what would happen if you never end up satisfying them. When the father does this he realizes the outcome isn’t what he’d hope for. He then finally realizes that he still has time to meet that expectation and he isn’t being rushed.

This was an unexpected turn, as he passed away on June 8,1982, the day after his 39th birthday. This was the very same year that Giovanni decided to write this poem. She used this poem as a window to reach her readers, while letting out her deepest emotions through poetry to mourn the lost of her father. This is a double-sided piece of poetry that deals with decisions; implying that there are two conflicting sides of the story.

At the end of the story, the narrorator chooses the girl, but ends up regretting it. I too can connect with the regret he feels. He had a tough decision between the girl and the fish. The boy chooses Sheila Mant because he cannot resist her beauty. He describes how amazing the moonlight looks shining on her skin.

Her writings include the poems “Legacies” and “Choices”. “Legacies” written in 1976 is one of Giovanni's famous pieces of work. Legacies express Giovanni’s knowledge passed down from her generation (Applebee 418). Her knowledge was passed by her grandmother a great teacher to her. She influenced her granddaughter in many ways, such as her informal speech/slang (PoetryFoundation 1).

The literary elements in this poem add to the effect the poem has on the reader, which can be different for everyone, but it makes the reader reflect on their own life and how kindness has changed

How would you feel if someone could control what you were thinking? In “The Feed” written by M.T Anderson, everyone living in the community had a feed in their brain that was controlled by one large organization. Violet, the main character, suffers through a malfunction in her feed that changes the way she sees her society. Most people’s opinions can be changed when they have experienced the benefits and the disadvantages of something. Since Violet is aware of how life is with and without the feed, she becomes hesitant to believing that her community is being run efficiently.
