Analyzing Ruben Cantu's Murder Case

This story comes to us from the little town of Olathe Kansas via the Los Angeles Times. However, this story was also on the front-page of The New York Times. Our author, David Eulitt, leads with the defendant telling jurors he didn 't care what sentence was handed down. The author continues, Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe had urged the jury to recommend a death sentence. The jury convicted 74-year-old Frazier Glenn Miller Jr. of capital murder for the April 2014 shootings, Eulitt notes.

Alton Logan was at age 28 when he was arrested and charged for a murder that occurred on January 11, 1982. The fatal shooting of Lloyd Wickliffe, who was an off-duty corrections officer passing by as a security guard, happened during a robbery attempt at a McDonald’s restaurant in the suburbs of Chicago. Mr. Logan was sentenced to life in prison even though there was no physical evidence linking him to the murder. Two other separate attorneys knew that he was innocent because one of their clients confessed to them privately that he murdered the security officer. He was an innocent person who winded up spending 26 years of his life in prison.

According to the Death Penalty Information Center, 10 people have been executed for being responsible for a murder they did not commit. Five of those people, like Wood, were executed in Texas. This does not mean the state has not commuted punishments for defendants like Wood in the past. Let's explore another case, where we have Ryan Ferguson, from Jefferson City, Missouri. Ferguson is accused of killing a popular sports editor, Kent Heitholt, from Columbia Daily Tribune, on Halloween night in 2001. Ferguson has been in prison now for eight years. The accuser is Charles Erickson, who claims that he and Ferguson agreed to rob someone for money to help them buy more alcohol. Erickson went in to the police station two years after the murder and gave the police suspicion that he knew some of what happened the night Heitholt was killed.

Anthony Graves was wrongly convicted and sentenced to death by the state of Texas. His conviction was for the murders of Bobbie Davis, her adult daughter, and her four grandchildren on October 21, 1994. He was to be executed on October 27, 2010, but was exonerated due to new evidence surfacing about Charles Sebesta, Anthony’s lawyer.

Another example of a false execution is in Carlos De Luna 's case, who was executed in 1989 for the stabbing of Wanda Lopez, a convenience store clerk. There were two eyewitnesses who played a key role in the conviction of De Luna. Before the murder and robbery, George Aguirre was filling up at the gas station, when he saw a man standing outside the store slide a knife with the blade exposed into his pocket and enter. The man asked Aguirre for a ride to a nightclub, but he refused and went inside the store to warn Lopez about the suspicious man. Aguirre left and Lopez called the police to describe the man.

Apprehended in August 1985, Ramirez was sentenced to death at the conclusion of his trial in 1989. He spent the remainder of his days at California's San Quentin Prison,

After several days of no communication and concern about Travis Alexander’s wellbeing, a couple of his friends went to his residence in Mesa, Arizona. They did in fact find their friend but he was lying in a pool of blood. One June 9, 2008, Travis was found with many wounds, including a slit neck, multiple stab wounds and a gunshot in the head. Police investigated the crime and came to the conclusion that he was killed five days earlier.

In another case, a man named Carlos DeLuna was sentenced to death and executed in the year 1989 for stabbing a gas clerk to death. DeLuna claimed he was innocent to the end. The United States has the largest prison population in the world. The South is imprisoning more people and at a higher rate and is executing more people. There's more people locked up in Texas than any other state, including California. There are more people in max lockdown, more people in for profit facilities, and more people executed than in any other state.

The death penalty is a precedent set centuries ago as a method of punishment for severe crimes. In 1923, the state of Texas declared that those sentenced to death were to suffer through the electric chair by the hands of the state, instead of being hanged by the hands of the counties (TX Executions). Later on, Texas would adopt the lethal injection method. Many see the death penalty as an inhumane violation of the basic rights defined in the Bill of Rights. On the other hand, others may argue that it is unpractical to abolish the death penalty due to the voidance of justice.

The death penalty is a controversial issue that has been debated in the United States for a long period of time. In our own state of Texas, executing convicted criminals has become second nature. This is due to the fact that Texas has executed more people than any other state in the United States since 1976. So why does Texas lead the United States in executions? There are many reasons and factors that has led to this point.

Throughout my entire life, I have been a fan of playing and watching football. Growing up I remember when my family and me would get together every Sunday to watch football.
