Andrew Carnegie's Career

Andrew Carnegie was born November 1835, in Dunfermline, Scotland. He grew up poor and lived in a small cottage attic with his family. In 1848 the carnegie family made the hard decision to immigrate to the United States. Carnegie was locally famous for decoding messages when he was a telegraph operator. He later worked himself up to being one of the most famous men in business during the late 1800’s.

He used his fortune to donate to charities and became the greatest philanthropist of all time. Despite his humble beginnings, Andrew Carnegie built the largest steel company and became a well known philanthropist. Andrew Carnegie was an American immigrant. Andrew was born on November 25, 1835 in the small town of Donfermline Scotland. (McGill 1).

Starting out as a poor Scottish immigrant, Carnegie was able to fairly make his way up the industrial food chain. Beginning as a teenage messenger boy in a Pittsburgh telgraph office, Carnegie became one of the first in the country to take messages by sound. This useful skill allowed Carnegie to ascend the industrial ladder. After investing all he owned into the steel mill corporation, Carnegie became one of the wealthiest men in the world. While occasionally being dubbed a "robber baron", Carnegie would quickly prove himself otherwise with his extreme generosity.

Andrew Carnegie, a Scottish was an immigrant who grew up poor who later became symbolic and widely known as the "American Dream" and one of the richest men in the country. Andrew started very young making money. Provided he had very little formal education, Carnegie grew up in a family that believed in the importance of knowledge, learning and reading books. Carnegie made his living and became so wealthy by being a Industrialist, businessman, entrepreneur and major philanthropist. His main source that lead to his wealth was his successful Carnegie Steel Company, which in the 1890's was the largest and most profitable industrial enterprise in the world.

So he decided to move to U.S in the late 1800s to have a better life. First, he worked in the railroad industry in seven years.

Imagine being the richest person in America & giving away money to people in need. Sounds like a nice thing to do, doesn’t it? This was the case for multi-millionaire, Andrew Carnegie. Carnegie grew up in Dunfermline, Scotland and moved along with his family to the United States in the late 1800s. He worked his way from being a poor Irish immigrant to become one of the most popular and successful industrialists that helped change the US steel industry in the late 1900s.

After the Civil War, the United States experienced many events in terms of economy, culture and social, and those events made a big change to the U.S. One of the richest person in the world, “Andrew Carnegie”, who is also known as the civil leader, built the steel mill by 1900. While, most of the firms were working by themselves or family at that time, he was good at vertical integration. Including him, thanks to the genius and rich inventors, the concept of social and economy of U.S. had changed. On the contrary, because these rich people had most of the finance, the number of people who were under the lower-class had been increasing.

A hero is someone who does a meaningful deed, worthy of remembrance and selflessly. Andrew Carnegie was a wealthy man. After he sold his steel company in 1900, he devoted the rest of his life giving money to charity. Did Andrew Carnegie’s generosity make him a hero? Andrew Carnegie was not a hero.

The late nineteenth century was a pivotal moment in American history. During this time, the Industrial Revolution transformed the nation, railroads had dissipated all throughout the country, and economic classes began to form, separating the wealthy from the poor. One of the wealthiest men of this generation was Andrew Carnegie, a Scottish immigrant who fled to America to make millions off the railroad, oil and even steel businesses. Carnegie is considered one of the richest men in history, and even with all that wealth he decided to give back to the community. As a matter of fact, Carnegie donated most of his funds to charities, universities and libraries in his last few years.

In the late 1800’s, J.P Morgan, John Rockefeller, and Andrew Carnegie had a negative impact on society because they were Robber Barons. They treated their workers very poorly in a way that should not have happened. J.P Morgan forced his workers to labor under harsh conditions for long hours and low pay. This is coming from a guy who has made millions of dollars and who has started a 60 million dollar business. Knowing how much money he has and how very little he pays his workers shows how ruthless he is as a business owner.

Carnegie was considered a Robber Baron for many reasons. For example, he gained huge profits because of his workers low wages. In the excerpt, “Who was Andrew Carnegie,” the author said, “his steel workers were often pushed to long hours and low wages.” Workers worked in harsh conditions and received no benefits causing them to live in poverty with scarce food, clothing, and shelter. Workers were tired of the low wages and decided to go on strike.

Andrew Carnegie Andrew Carnegie’s was one of the most successful businessmen during America’s Age of Industrialization in the 1880’s. After the Civil War, he saw a future in having a career in the iron industry, and later on, decided to invest in the steel industry (PBS). Though Carnegie is most known for his contribution in the steel industry, he took part in a few other businesses as well. However, the Gilded Age is an era full of poverty and corruption hidden underneath the prosperous, wealthy nation, and the working conditions within Carnegie Steel Company were not much better than those in other factories (Resetar).

He grew up in poverty. His father's name was William Carnegie, William worked as a weaver and was the only source of income for the family. Carnegie’s mother's name was Margaret Morrison. Carnegie’s father died in 1855, after his death Carnegie realized that he would have to take care of the family. Carnegie gotta education and by the age 18 Carnegie was a secretary for Thomas A. Scott, the superintendent of the western division for the Pennsylvania Railroad.
