One of the commandments from George Orwell’s Animal Farm that changed throughout the book because of the increasing corruption of the pigs is the fifth commandment. A quote from Animal Farm that shows how the fifth commandment changed is “They had thought the Fifth Commandment was 'No animal shall drink alcohol,' but there were two words that they had forgotten. Actually the Commandment read: ‘No animal shall drink alcohol TO EXCESS.’” (Orwell 51). This quote from George Orwell’s Animal Farm reveals how the fifth commandment in Animal Farm was changed. It also shows how the fifth commandment was changed because the words “to excess” were added to the end of the quote. In Animal Farm the reason why the fifth commandment was altered to include the words ‘to excess’ at the end is that after the great victory of the Battle of the Windmill the pigs decide to indulge in some of the alcohol that was still in Mr. Jones’s house, the pigs party all night and get drunk, in the morning Squealer tells the rest of the animals that Napoleon was dying (Orwell 50). …show more content…
