Annie Dillard's Sight Into Insight

According to David Foster Wallace, default setting is when we believe ourselves to be the “absolute center of the universe, the realest, most vivid and important person in existence.” In his “This is Water” speech, he continues to explain that we have a choice of what to think about and we “get to decide how we’re going to try to see it.” It would be not just looking at something small, but looking at something as a whole. While Annie Dillard’s “Seeing” doesn’t make reference to his idea of default setting, her essay still had plenty of points about the idea of seeing other things. In Annie Dillard’s “Seeing” she show multiples examples of not just looking at yourself, but rather at the smaller things that people would never really see unless they were to really try to look and see.

With the English language, there are thousands of different ways to describe an event or even a single object. In the two passages, two different authors use various methods to describe a large flock of birds in flight. The first author, John James Audubon, describes the flock in his book, Ornithological Biographies. The second author, Annie Dillard, describes the flock in her book, Pilgrim at Tinker Creek. The passages written by John James Audubon and Annie Dillard have many similarities; however, there are also many differences that set the two stories apart.

This is a summary of “A Christmas Story” by Annie Dillard. Every Christmas there was a massive dinner held in a seemingly never-ending dining hall. It was lavish and spacious with a table that was as long as a river and was decorated with many different table cloths and decorations. The ceiling of the hall was covered in chandeliers and the floor was filled with different groupings of people: the sick and injured, the children, to those who wanted to dance or participate in games or various others who gathered in separate sections throughout the hall.

Authors often create ideas and different views in the reader's head through a mix of symbolization and contrast. With this combination, the reader can interpret what’s being presented in front of them in various ways. A “lens” is created and the ideas and views erupting into the reader's head are unique to them, and them alone. This lens grants the reader an ability to comprehend and contrast the author's deeper meanings, but in their own individual process. Through simple beliefs that one holds to be true, and how one reacts to the world around them, a subconscious lens is always equipped when reading.

In “Intricacy” Dillard highlights many issues, facts, and characteristics of this world. Dillard highlights the necessity to preserve nature, no matter how big or small. She wants us to focus on the things that we can't see with the naked eye, the things we are unaware of, and the things we walk past every day without noticing.

Throughout the history of mankind many things have changed from environments to governments. However as these two writers, John James and Annie Dillard, have stated birds have always done the same thing as they migrate to wherever is comfortable. As these writers exclaimed their descriptions and effects there are many things that can be compared and contrasted within them. Descriptions from John and Annie were different from sound of the birds and the appearance of them but were the same when describing the flight of the birds, the effects were contrasted by John and Annie’s feelings but were very similar with the effect the birds motion had on them. When seeing a flock of birds there are many details people can describe.

Childhood is the very building block of life. It's where we all start and where many problems, successes, and traits that appear later in life can be drawn back to. The importance of childhood boils down to select instances that stand out to us as age fades into our memories. In Annie Dillard's short story, ¨An American Childhood,¨ she, through her informal tone puts the reader in her shoes portraying moments in her life when words or phrases stood out to her.

“The Chase” is about an adult chasing some kids, but Annie Dillard makes the story transition from throwing snowballs to “wanting the glory to last forever” and how the excitement of life at one moment can affect someone in the future to show that the excitement of life will always be there even when one is no longer a kid. The story starts with a group of friends, imagining how a game of football goes and continues with the encounter of a stranger. From throwing snowballs at his car to him chasing them till they couldn’t run anymore. The writer, Richard Louv, in his argumentative paper, Last Child in the Woods, supports his argument that relates to the separation between people and nature. To support his argument, he uses rhetorical devices in order to motivate the readers to reminisce about their past and how nature applied to it. Louv’s purpose is to manifest the feelings of the reader’s past to connect with his ideals of nature. Louv begins his argumentative essay by including an experiment about changing the colors of butterflies’ wings, which addresses a problem that is apparent in our society. Today’s culture thinks that real nature “isn’t worth looking at” if they can just construct their own imitation of nature.

In ¨The Chase¨ from the memoir An American Childhood, Annie Dillard recalls a memorable incident from her childhood, which remained throughout her life, even till the present day. She narrates the adventurous incident where she had voluntarily instigated a strange man -thinking he wouldn’t react- into chasing after her on one particular day.
