This article presents an analysis of what it’s like to be a black person employed in the NCAA. One of the main ideas discusses the fair hiring and opportunities for black head football coaches and offensive coordinators in the National Collegiate Athletic Association better known as the NCAA. An extensive investigation was conducted which lead them to believe that not only the hiring process but the ability to advance as in the college

In this article, they analyze the promotions and firings of NCAA Division 1 college coaches for both basketball and football. The objective is to research and to assess whether these coaches are compensated for the academic performance of their players thru promotion and or retention decisions. In this article, we discover that according to statistics, the better the player performs academically, the likelihood that the coach is fired is slim to none. However, there was no evidence that the positive academic performance led to a promotion for the coach either. This gives valuable information to consider while writing regarding how successful I will be as a coach even if my players are academic scholars or
The NBA did not desegregate until the late 1950’s roughly 5 years after baseball had fully Integrated. Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton and Earl Lloyd were the first African Americans to be over Drafted in the second round by the Boston Celtics. Beforehand there were African American Teams, in the 1904 they were called black fives. They were branches outside of the YMCA, During the black fives era the teams emerged out of the cities: New York, Washington, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Cleveland. The teams were affiliated with churches, social clubs and newspapers.
Some argue that the rule is not comprehensive enough and only requires teams to interview minority candidates without guaranteeing that they will be hired (Moore & Levitt, 2018). Critics also contend that the rule is often seen as a box-checking exercise by teams, and the lack of diversity among team owners also plays a significant role in perpetuating systemic racism in the league (Neuman, 2022). Also, according to the case, there is a possibility of teams not complying with the rule or conducting token interviews to fulfill the requirement without serious consideration of minority candidates. It is true that there is still a considerable underrepresentation of minorities in positions of leadership given the quantity of minority head coaches who have plateaued in recent years. For instance, Brian Flores claimed in a lawsuit that the NFL is run like a plantation because of the stark disparity between the racial composition of the league's players—nearly 60% of whom are black—and that of club owners, administration, and coaching positions (Neuman, 2022).
Advertisement Men of color held in esteem by the media, while entirely worthy of praise, too often personify a circumscribed spectrum of human qualities. Prowess in sports, physical achievement in general and musicality are emphasized inordinately. Common role models depicted by the media such as rap or hip-hop stars and basketball players imply limited life choices. When is the last time you have seen a black college professor, doctor, lawyer or scientist selling a product? Many important dynamics that affect black lives, such as a history of economic disadvantage and a prevailing anti-black bias in society, don’t often make it to the presses or the screens.
Olsen wrote, “the UTEP athletic department and coaches explain certain acts of prejudice, such as clamping down on Negroes who date white girls, in terms of the El Paso community,” despite businessmen in the community saying it “makes no difference whom the Negroes date.” In addition, they would call Black athletes by the [n-word]. White coaches using the [n-word] to refer to their (Black) players, as is often said in the sports world, holds a disturbing similarity to plantation owners addressing their slaves, a phenomenon called
Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are institutions of higher education in the United States founded primarily for the education of African Americans. Prior to the mid-1960s, HBCUs were virtually the only institutions open to African Americans due to the vast majority of predominantly white institutions prohibiting qualified African Americans from acceptance during the time of segregation. As such, they are institutional products of an era of discrimination and socially constructed racism against African Americans (Joseph, 2013). Successfully, millions of students have been educated in spite of limited resources, public contempt, accreditation violations, and legislative issues. The purpose of this research paper is to discuss
Out of the seven black coaches five of them use to play the game. If we look at the NBA for the last three years there has been a decline of fifty percent in black coaches. It seems like there is a major race problem in the NBA. It’s even tougher on the black coaches seeing that there are no black general managers in the NBA. Over
On March 19th 1966, college basketball fans in the southern and eastern portion of the United States were glued to the television as the starting lineup for the 1966 National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball Division I national championship game was announced. At this moment, no Kentucky Wildcat fan could believe their eyes or ears; Don Haskins, head coach of Western Texas, was starting five African American players for this monumental game. This particular lineup, in terms of race, had never been done before in NCAA basketball tournament history. After the final buzzer, Texas Western defeated the heavily favored, previous three time National Championship winners Kentucky Wildcats, coached by basketball legend Adolf Rupp. In the Civil Rights Era, there were many brave African American men who were breaking through the color barriers in collegiate and professional sports.
Redick, a former star college basketball player for Duke University and current NBA player for the Los Angeles Clippers, have all strongly aligned themselves in favor of paying student-athletes what they need and what is deserved. Critics worry about losing the integrity of the game and some say the scholarship is enough for the athletes. However, there is an opportunity to solve this debate by opening up a free-market for all athletes and schools. I am arguing that there should be an open and free market for student-athletes and if schools need to pay more than a scholarship to get them to attend, then the players should be able to sign the deals and get paid. Overall, student-athletes should have the opportunity to be compensated for their skill, time, and talent, because those reasons can all lead to an excess of profits for
Scholars, primarily African American, have been emphasizing the critical need of African American male teachers in their mentoring and recruitment initiatives, especially following the 1954 Brown decision whose implementation disheveled and weakened African American communal networks, as it either forced the desegregation of community schools’ faculty or many of their closings; the result of which unleashed a backlash of humiliation experienced by many African American male teachers and administrators, as they were either indiscriminately demoted and/or lost their jobs; thereby relinquishing significant positions of authority to White teachers and administrators who maintained control over the curriculum as well as the social and cultural
1. Why was Coach Boone given the head coaching job of the Titans? At T.C Williams’ high school, Coach Boone was given the position of head coach for their football team. His racial background influenced their decision trying to get black residents to see him as a symbol of pride and respect that lacks in their community.
During the early 1960s, the Loyola Ramblers became a pivotal educational establishment to include more African American players than other teams throughout the country. The historical facts presented by Lenehan (2013) define the differences between the number of black players playing on the team in comparisons to other teams during the racial integration period of sporting events Coach George Ireland of the Ramblers had defied conventions by starting four black players: “It couldn’t have happened if Coach George Ireland hadn’t flouted the conventions of the day by starting four black players nigh in and night out” (Lenehan 56). This major innovation defines the influence of the Civil Rights Movement to begin including black players into predominantly all-white leagues. Lenehan adequately defines the numeric validation of Coach Ireland’s pioneering use of multiple black players that were used in these collegiate
When it comes to the topic of integration, Rhoden stated that it “stopped a growing momentum toward independence and self-defining within the African American community” (136). It was wrong for white individuals to have treated the Negro League as if it did not matter whatsoever. It is wrong to think that someone will never have the power to become something more than just a player. It is wrong to try to keep these individuals at a certain level without allowing them to ever participate in the business side of their work. Integration is a form of union, of share; however, it is clear to see that this was not something white folks wanted to happen.
In the movie “Remember the Titans” we meet coach Boone, who is a black male who become head coach on a football team for Virginia High School. The town was based on segregation. The white people hated the black people. Boone becomes the head coach to placate rising racial tensions and the fact that all other high schools are white only. Coach Yoast that was the head coach was not happy with that, neither are the players.
The achievement-oriented leadership demonstrated by each coach helped motivate the players to want to succeed. This showed the integration of supportive, achievement, directive and participative path goal leadership style. It is important as a leader to be flexible between each style to achieve the maximum positive outcome as proven by both
Sports leaders have position power over all players. However, the role of a sports leader is much more encompassing than being a good judge of a player’s ability. This implies that a leader should treat each player with the respect he/she deserves. Moreover, different leadership techniques apply to different players. As is the case with workers of varying strengths and weaknesses, sports leaders also need to flex their leadership style and practice the teachings of situational leadership.
