The early 1900s were a time of widespread social and political change in America. During this time, many Americans adopted new, more modern ideas about labor, cultural diversity and city life. Some of these Progressive ideas were brought about by the need for reform in the workplace due to the grown of large companies and rapid industrialization. Not everyone supported the ideas of the Progressive Movement, however. Anti-Progressives, especially in the South, preferred traditional, rural lifestyles, and a slower, simpler way of living. They resisted change brought about by industrialization, opposed immigration and integration, and held tightly to their racist beliefs, which continued to be validated by the Jim Crow laws. The Progressive Era was a period of immense change during the turn of the nineteenth century. Progressives were a diverse group of politicians and citizens who desired a change in the economic, social, and political atmosphere of the time. Their activism and reform come under question from historians because of their lack of unity, and thus the validity and effectiveness of the movement is challenged. However, the Progressives were successful to a certain extent- they were successful in influencing legislation for general improvements, despite their lack of homogeneity.
Due to the ratification of the amendments, many southern elites could not stand the fact that African Americans were freed. One solution that was developed was to destroy reconstruction by murdering Black Americans. The Ku Klux Klan was then formed, this group consisted of vindictive Confederate Army veterans. Sought out to be heros to many southern democrats, but a nightmare for African American families. The Ku Klux Klan terrorized many African American families, burned down churches, drove thousands of families out of their homes, and caused great mayhem.
Founded in 1866, the (KKK) extended into virtually each southern state by 1870 and have become a vehicle for white southern resistance to the Republican Party’s Reconstruction-era policies aimed toward establishing political and economic equality for blacks. Its members waged associate underground campaign of intimidation and violence directed at white and black Republican leaders. Congress passed legislation designed to curb KKK, the organization saw its primary goal “the reestablishment of white supremacy” fulfilled through Democratic victories in state legislatures across the South within the decennary. In the period between 1900 and 1920, the federal government and reformers were very successful in bringing social, economic, and political reform to the federal government. While not every aspect of it was successful, the rights of women, fighting against child labor and limiting the control of trusts and monopolies were three distinct successes of that time. Even before the progressive era, women challenged their place and articulated new visions of social, political and economic equality. The progressive era was a turning point for women as organizations evolved fighting for equal rights. Woman began to become very involved in a variety of reform movements.
From 1896 to 1924, America went through a period known as progressivism in which people of all walks of life banded together to oppose conservatism and reform society. Progressives generally believed that government is necessary for change, however; it had to more significantly embody the ideals of democracy. Some of the specific changes that progressives wanted were regulating railroads, a direct election of senators, graduated income tax, limited immigration and eight-hour workdays. By supporting these changes, the progressives hoped to promote and expand democracy and thus give the people more power.

The Progressive Era was an era in the United States from the 1890’s to the 1920’s in which many changes occurred. The most common changes in the Progressive Era included regulating businesses, voting rights, and improvements in healthcare, education, and many other factors that have contributed to the United States that we know today. Although there were many improvements and changes during the progressive era, the United States today is very different, but is also similar in some ways. Some similarities include the government, voting rights and equality for races that are considered minorities, and business regulation. The Holocaust Should Be Taught Education is an important aspect of an adolescent's life. The beginning stages of learning is always the hardest. The discussion of teaching the Holocaust to students is one of great controversy and debate. Properly educating our current generation about the Holocaust allows students to be more accepting of diversity, helps understand that the Holocaust was one of the tragic genocides throughout human history, and enhances self reflection and critical thinking skills.
7. I believe that effectiveness heavily relies on appropriateness when judging political protest actions. The aforementioned methods of political protest have different levels of effectiveness and appropriateness, as seen in the lists in the earlier activities.
