At the turn of the 19th century, America presented the policy of imperialism and there was a ton of debate over the subject. Some say that imperialism would benefit America by increasing trade and help make this country more powerful. Others say that imperialism would be horrible for America because we are taking over countries without their permission and restricting their choice. The United States should adopt the policy of imperialism because it would help grow our country, increase trade, and help the economy.

How could these documents be used to explain a driving force behind European imperialism in Africa? These document could be used to explain through a few of different things like technological advancements, African colonies and raw materials they had, and economic factors. These are three reasons to help explain the driving force behind European imperialism and also could answer questions that go along with the main question like why the Europeans imperialized Africa. Why did it have to be Africa at all? These are all questions and ways to explain the main question.

The time period of 1750-1900 CE was a time of modernization and westernization following the Enlightenment and Age of Exploration which propelled Europe into being the central power of the world. It started off with the Industrial Revolution in Britain along with the emergence of capitalism which modernized European technology, weaponry, and ideas as well as giving them the desire for wealth all of which created a foundation for European imperialism in various parts of the world. Asia and Africa both fell victim to European imperialism, but to different extents both politically where Asia mostly retained autonomy while Africa fell under direct rule and socially where Africans fell victim to slavery and exploitation to a much greater degree

In the nineteenth century, Europeans had a desire to explore the boundless world in front of them and impressive transportational technology like steamboats to get them places. The desire to become “imperialists,” the desire to make an empire by conquering weaker countries, was also strengthened by a racist worldview that Africans and Asians needed the influence of Europe’s “civilized” society. So Europe set off, each nation vying for its own colonies, to wage wars, create treaties and expand their borders. It sounds glamorous on the surface, but in reality, millions of natives lost their lives in the desperate struggle to save their homeland from the greedy invaders.

In the late 1800s, Europe was scrambling to conquer vast amounts of land. Imperialism had swept the continent by storm, with many countries vying for pieces of Africa and Asia to control. From 1880 to 1900, Britain, France, Germany, and Italy fought for African possessions and by 1900, nearly the whole continent had been split and placed under European rule. There was plenty of motivation for Europeans to conquer the world, and while some supported it, others didn’t. Most people in Europe at this time held ethnocentric views toward the “uncivilized” cultures in the world.

Imperialism was a controversial idea that a nation can extend its power outward through means of diplomatic or military force. This often results in a shift of power from one major force currently in control to another. The people of that nation under control conflict may also experience wars, rebellions, or cultural destruction. Looking at some of these events, we see some positives and negatives of imperialistic action taken by the United States, and how it affected the nations imperialized by the United States. For starters, let’s look at Hawaii’s annexation.

Imperialism drove the world, from the Roman Empire, to America in the early 1900’s. The US imperialized nations to give them peace, gain their natural resources, and protect them. But not all things imperialism are good. When the US imperialized some nations, it limited their ability to govern and protect themselves. But the US has more experience doing so in a modern world, and would ultimately benefit them.

However it hurt other countries who were not in favour of imperialism, such as Egypt, China, and India. Peoples in colonized countries developed nationalist resistance movements to protest imperialism, both violently and nonviolently, whereas supporters of imperialism claimed it brought modernity, civilization, and education to “backward” colonized people. Imperialism really had to do with Europe countries wanting more colonies and land to gain more power. This definitely caused a lot of problems between France, Britain, Germany, and Italy. Britain and France already had a lot of power and colonies but they still wanted more power so they were still trying to get more land, colonies, and even more powerful armies. On the other hand, Germany and Italy were tired of being the underdogs and wanted to gain control of more colonies which got in the way of France and Britain which cause some issues and
