In a western society that continuous to renounce communalism and embrace individualism, it is easily noticed that the problems faced by few are ignored by the many. This ignorance, intentional or not, is allowing communal problems to accelerate the pace. However, the issue at hand is one that affects you whether or not you are aware of it; if you are an American, or in any western society for that matter. It affects nearly twenty percent of the under eighteen population in the United States and costs taxpayers on average 14 billion dollars per year. As a Parent, it can tack $19,000 onto the total of raising each child. The issue is childhood obesity, and it is only accelerating as a percentage of children in both America and all western nations of the world. More likely to be accepted by the western minded is Yanovski’s suggestion of diet journals being shared in public classes and worked upon as a group to develop better eating habits as children. Either or would inevitably save taxpayers money down the road and increase the overall quality of life for the average American at the same
In William F. Buckley’s essay “Why Don’t We Complain?” he illustrates several uncomfortable situations he was involved in where no one complained. According to Buckley American people everywhere have refrained from speaking up. I strongly agree with him. We the American people don’t complain in situations where complaining is acceptable.
To sum it up, obesity is terrible and deadly disease that is affecting many of our youths today. It is caused by many different things, and has a lot of negative health effects. But, there are plenty of ways to fix this epidemic, both at home and as a whole. As a nation United, America has overcome many challenges and struggles, and this is simply another one that can be
The high demand for medical care also increases the financial burden on the families and therefore the community as well. As one can see the community health is greatly effected by the high rates of obesity among its individuals. Children in particular have a massive effect because not only are they the future of that community, but they also influence the schools in that region. In today’s society “one out of three children is considered overweight or obese” (Little 2011). Childhood obesity is linked to several severe health problems. Children who are overweight or obese are at risk of having cardiovascular disease and problems relating to that such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and type-two diabetes during childhood. Physical problems aren’t the only problem relating to obesity; “Research confirms obese children are at a higher risk for social and psychological problems” because overweight kids tend to get bullied due to their weight (Little 2011). Julia Child once said, “No one is born a great cook, one learns by doing.” In this world today, a sad fact is that only about 60 percent of people can cook a meal. Now, imagine if as a child, you were taught how to chop a vegetable, or how to sauté a piece of chicken. Studies show that if you involve children at a young age to take charge in the kitchen they will developed life-long healthy eating habits, their self-esteem will rise, and their social skill will improve immensely. Personally, at the end of a long school day, one of my favorite ways to unwind is by slicing and dicing vegetables for dinner.

Now that the number of obese children is on a dramatic incline we have to start looking at when does it move from a weight problem to neglect. I believe that while obesity in children is a big deal it is going to be a hard one to prove, even the article states that while there are a few cases that have resulted in removal of the child from its home, it’s not the predominate resolution for the problem. We have to prove that there are comorbid conditions present and that they will be unresolvable if they are left unattended, and personally I think that is where the problem is going
