The United States has always been the go-to place of immigration. Thousands of years ago, the first original inhabitants crossed the bridge that connected Asia and North America. By the 1500s, the first Europeans, led by the Spanish and French began to establish settlements in what became the United States. Some of America’s first settlers came in search of freedom to practice their faith. Many more immigrants came to America to find economic opportunities, and make a living for themselves.
However, because the price of passage was steep, an estimated one-half or more of the white Europeans who made the voyage did so by becoming indentured servants. The Atlantic slave trade was the biggest illegal immigration in world history,and is sometimes called the Holocaust of Enslavement because of how many innocent people were unjustly killed. The first step of this trade was the Europeans who would travel to the west coast of Africa. Once they arrived it was common that they would bribe tribes with goods and weapons, commonly guns, that were used into turning against their own and capturing their neighbors. Upon being taken against their will the enslaved were then shipped across the Atlantic ocean. During this 2-4 month period they were beaten, shoved into small barracks, and many died due to lack of sanitation.
Mexican Americans have immigrated and emigrated to Americas since before the Mexican American war of 1848. Immigration of Chicanos has been happening for a very long time, but the only difference is that it is now becoming a problem. Before the border was created Mexicans would legally cross to America, with no immigration problems, until 1924. When the border was created, Mexicans and Chicanos no longer has access to their old Chicano lives. Children continue to illegally be brought to America in search of better opportunities.

Immigration is often looked as hostile in our country, but some of the population including some of our leaders as presidents and other fields of government has tried to take a step in action and in explaining that immigrants do impact our communities and economy positively and that we need to maintain good relations with our fellow neighbor, Mexico. In fact, many employers such as in agriculture encourage immigrants to work for them because they knew they would do the hard labor. Plus, it was cheap labor. As many as 3 million immigrants even became legalized. It wasn't until the Immigration and Control Act in 1986 started heightening the security at our borders and sanctioning business.
The United States of America, being a country founded by immigrants, is known all over the world as the land of great opportunities. People from all walks of life travelled across the globe, taking a chance to find a better life for them and their family. Over the years, the population of immigrants has grown immensely, resulting in the currently controversial issue of illegal immigration. Illegal immigrants are the people who have overstayed the time granted on their US, visa or those who have broken the federal law by crossing the border illegally. Matt O’Brien stated in his article “The government thinks that 10.8 million illegal immigrants lived in the country in January 2009, down from a peak of nearly 12 million in 2007.”(Para, 2) While some argue that illegal immigrants burden the United States of America and its economy, others believe that they have become essential and are an important part of the US, economy.
