Argumentative Essay: Women's Reproductive Health

Debbie Dingell is a representative from Michigan and her party is Democrat. After looking on her webpage I came upon this direct quote about the decision made in Texas about women and reproductive rights. I enjoyed her quote on this issue I strongly believe that women should have the control over what they do with their bodies. I would fully support a person who believes that women’s issues are still not handled in 2017. Having to drive hundreds of miles in order to get proper care is not acceptable and I am glad to read that Debbie Dingell agrees with that issue.

“it's a woman’s right to control her own destiny, to be able to make choices without the Big Brother state telling her what she and cannot do” (Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg). Women have fought for their entire lives for equal rights which for some apparent reasons have not been acknowledged. Roe vs. Wade had changed the outlook on the United States and on a woman’s rights to her own body. Roe vs. Wade goes back to 1973 which was between a women who had an unplanned surgery in Texas who wanted to make abortions legal. Norma Leah McCorvey, better known as “Jane Roe” was the plaintiff in this case, after her case the U.S Supreme Court had ruled that state laws banning abortion are unconstitutional.

From 1848 to 1920, an outrageous span of 70 years, women fought for equal rights, to have their voices and opinions heard. Little by little women have gained rights they have so passionately fought for. In 1973, about 50 years after women became eligible to vote, and began to be taken more seriously, the case of Roe v Wade granted women to have one of the most impactful rights to date, to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. Now, it is safe to say that all women and perhaps most men would not want women to lose the rights they have today, especially because there have been many influential women around the world who have been given the chance to be impactful because of the rights they possess. Charlotte Taft once said “Women who have abortions do so because they value life and because they take very seriously the responsibilities that come not just with birth, but with nurturing a human being”. The Editorial Board at The New York Times believes in this statement as well. The Editorial Board published an editorial on June 27, 2016 titled “A major Victory for Abortion Rights”. The article published, is about a change in Texas 's anti-abortion law and is intended for woman who can or will bear children. The editorial was created to persuade these women that if another woman who is pregnant and cannot keep the unborn child or does not want to keep the child, that these women should have the right to abort the embryo or fetus legally.

Patricia Maginnis was one of these women. In the 1960s Maginnis created the Citizizens’ Committee for Humane Abortion Laws and openly asserted that abortion was a decision the government should have no influence over. Among those who backed up her opinions one finds the National Organization for Women (NOW) who in 1967 publicly declared support of annulling the current laws regarding abortion. The ones expressing the most evident approval of the repeal though were various Women’s Liberation Movement groups such as New York City Redstockings and the Chicago Women’s Liberation Union along with black feminist groups.

The Right to Abortion On January 22, 1973, in a 7-2 ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down it’s landmark decision in the case of Roe v. Wade, which recognized that the constitutional right to privacy extends to a woman’s right to make her own personal medical decisions — including the decision to have an abortion without interference from politicians (Planned Parenthood). There are many moments in history when Roe v. Wade has been so close to being overturned, yet it is still in place. Abortion should stay legal, or not overturned, for the health of women everywhere. First, this important case took place at the time of abortion being illegal in most states, including Texas, where Roe v. Wade began.

Abortion has been performed for a long time. It was legal in the United States from the beginning it was created/founded. “At the time the Constitution was adopted, abortions were openly advertised and commonly performed. ”(History of Abortion) But in the mid-to-late 1800s some states began passing laws that made abortion illegal.

Before Roe v. wade the number of deaths from illegal abortions was around 5000 and in the 50s and 60s the number of illegal abortions ranged from 200,000 to 1.2 million per year. These illegal abortions pose major health risks to the life of the woman including damage to the bladder, intestines as well as rupturing of the uterus. The choice to become a mother must be given to the woman most importantly because it’s her body, her health, and she will be taking on a great responsibility. A woman’s choice to choose abortion should not be restricted by anyone; there are multiple reasons why abortion will be the more sensible decision for the female.

Abortion is a very controversial topic, for example, one side of this topic believes abortion is cruel and committing murder, while the other side believes that since the fetus or embryo isn 't developed enough to be considered a living human being yet, that abortion is not commiting murder. Despite this information, there is a lot more to abortion than the opinion of it being “right” or “wrong”. According to “Students for life” who are pro life, about 1 million abortions are executed each year in the US. That data adds up to 22% of pregnancies ending in abortion.

Abortion legalization We can do whatever we want with our body, it is our property. What government can do about this is to suggest, not to suppress. However, more than 300,000 females around the world are carrying a rapist’s child, due to formidable pressure from the government’s authorities. Why should the government care about our body?

Teenage pregnancy is the condition of being pregnant of adolescence aged 10 to 19. Those who are affected are the girl herself up to the national society. The victims of teenage pregnancy are the girl herself, her child, her parents and relatives and the national society as a whole. It will also probably make her economically vulnerable.
