I was surprised by the whole unit reading about the unfortunate racial tension between Caucasians and African-American people. Even After the civil war there was still too much segregation. Schools formed to teach African-American students finding a way to separate Caucasians from African-Americans. Colleges created for African-American students due to the Morrill Act, of 1890. Yet Caucasian colleges were still getting more state funding.

In 1990 only 48% of Americans approved of interracial marriage. By 2012 the approval rate was up to 83%.

In this article, Staples discusses the treatment of African Americans by U.S. police, emphasizing the history of racial profiling and discriminatory treatment. Staples focuses mainly on the arrest of Henry Louis Gates, Jr. who got arrested in his home located in Cambridge, Massachusetts which relvealed the sharp racial divide over what police could do to innocent black people. Robert goes on to explain that the racial underpinnings cause the majoritity of the public to favor law enforcement as a slutionto crime. Robert claims the political support for U.S. legal discrimination leads the people against minorities in criminal penalties over small crimes which usually are nonviolent offenses. In the past I have struggled with my biracial identity. As a child I was confused about which community I belonged in because I am a mix of Navajo and Caucasian. As I got older, I began to question myself and who I was. I felt like I did not belong to either the Native or Caucasian community because in both groups I felt like someone else. I felt as if I had to live two lives that were completely separated.

Throughout the semester, the course has taught me a lot about myself and those around me. I have learned that based on Cross’ racial identity model I am in stage 5. It was new to me to find out there was model based on racial identity. Stage 5 means that I able to talk to anyone in and outside of my racial group. Which would mean that I would not have to seek counseling to correct an issue because there isn't one.

Race seemed to have lost its persuasiveness in the political scene during the early 2000s. During the George Bush administration era, the republicans had the highest number of African American and Latino votes the party has ever had, “ reversing a decades-long trend” . (Vance J.D) While this is a change for the better the majority of the white working class believed that the next generation wouldn't be better off compared to the predicament they were currently in. Also during this time “neighborhoods grew increasingly segregated” by race and financial status, so that the poor lived with poor, blacks lived with blacks, whites lived with whites, etc.

Why is there still racial inequality? Racial inequality still exists even after Rosa Parks, Barack Obama, Martin Luther King Jr., Abraham Lincoln, James Madison, Malcolm X, and Nelson Mandela tried to stop it. Most African Americans and Hispanics expect for inequality to stop. Because they are most likely to be killed by whites, have no good education, unemployment, incarceration, no good health, and aren't paid that much money.

In the experiment “Interracial Roommate Relationships” by Natalie J. Shook and Russell H. Fazio, prejudice in a college setting and changes in prejudice when interacting with people of other races was explored. The experimenters decided that a college dormitory would be the perfect setting to explore their questions. The underlying basis for their questions was the idea that prejudice stems from insufficient knowledge and exposure. For their experiment, they explored two different areas. One being the satisfaction of individuals with their roommates in interracial rooms and same race rooms.

Incompatible Interracial relationships are difficult to maintain in the United States because of differences in cultural upbringing as well as racism and xenophobia. The book The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan focuses on four Chinese mothers who describe their past hardships and adjustment to the United States as well as their relationships with their American born daughters. The mothers try to save their children from experiencing the same things that they have been through. In the book, there are a few interracial couples such as Rose Hsu and Ted, Waverly Jong and Rich, and Ying Ying St.Clair and her husband Clifford. They all have trouble loving and understanding each other.

I want to marry someone who I love and not care about their religion. I want to think about love first and then religion, not the other way around. I believe in all religions, I believe that everyone should believe in different gods, idols or even nature. Everyone should believe in what they want to. I do not necessarily believe in the Jewish God

Throughout history social scientists have been trying to examine the different parameters of race in terms of phenotypic characteristics, and cultural behaviors regarding the different groups that society construct’s. legally judges have had different rulings regarding the categorization of different ethnicities and groups within the United States. Many philosophers such as Kwame Appiah, and Scientists such as Dr. James Watson have had opposing arguments on the topic of race and whether it exists or not. In order to do so we need to examine the different definitions of race, and analyze them in order to see how race is a social construct, where people’s notions of race and their interactions with different races determine the way they perceive
